Job Description
The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. The role involves handling blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontaminating, and updating patient information.
ResponsibilitiesCollect and store specimens according to established procedures.Properly explain in a clear but courteous manner the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.Fully understand all of the physicians' orders.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure 100% correctness.Package specimens for transport.Store specimen samples according to required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department trainings.Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.Essential SkillsValid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed (if required by state).Minimum of 2 years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.High School Diploma or GED.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience with venipuncture, phlebotomy, and specimen collection.Work Environment
