Job Description

The main function of a Phlebotomist II is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This role

involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures, and properly explaining the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections to patients.

 

Responsibilities

Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.Update patient information and collect and store specimens following established protocols.Clearly and courteously explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and other specimen collections such as urine or fecal samples.Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.Fully understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.Ensure 100% accuracy by checking all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples at the required temperature.Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes and accurately label them.Follow procedures necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of specimens.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department training sessions.Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
