The main function of a Phlebotomist II is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This role involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures, explaining the process to patients, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of specimen samples.
Responsibilities
+ Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data.
+ Decontaminate and update patient information as necessary.
+ Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
+ Explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, or other specimen collections clearly and courteously.
+ Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
+ Fully understand and follow all physician orders.
+ Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately.
+ Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order.
+ Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
+ Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.
+ Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes and accurately label them.
+ Follow specific procedures to maintain the integrity of the specimens during transport.
+ Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
+ Attend annual department trainings.
+ Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
+ Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed (as required in some states).
+ Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
+ High School Diploma or GED.
+ 2-4 years of experience in phlebotomy.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Experience in patient care, specimen processing, and drawing blood.
+ Knowledge of health care procedures and protocols.
Work Environment
The work environment for this position includes working in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. You will be using various equipment such as centrifuges, needles, and computers. The role requires compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations, and attendance at annual department trainings is mandatory.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $21.00/hr.
