Shift: 40 hrs/pay as sched. in shifts of 8 hr days. Rot Sat/holi. Start time varies btwn 7a -9a. Rot to other locns as sched. is required.

Summary:

Obtains acceptable blood samples from patients by venipuncture or capillary draw while following established departmental guidelines for sample quality. Maintains the safety and the comfort of patients at all times. Adheres to hospital guidelines, safety/regulatory requirements, and quality control standards. Performs patient registration, visit processing, and other clerical duties, as necessary. Performs specimen processing tasks as required, including but not limited to accessioning, centrifugation, bar coding, and packaging for transport. Upholds the mission, vision, values, and customer service standards of The MetroHealth System.

Qualifications:

Required: HS Diploma or passage of a high school equivalency exam. Meets one of the following: • Registered Phlebotomy Technician (PBT/ASCP) or registry eligible*: Has 6 months of phlebotomy experience in a high volume, fast-paced ambulatory hospital setting (performing Phlebotomy on at least 45 patients per 8-hour shift with adult or pediatric patients) within the last 2 years or has completed a training program internship in a high patient volume setting. • Unregistered Phlebotomist: Has 7 years of phlebotomy experience in a high patient volume setting (performing Phlebotomy on at least 45 patients per 8-hour shift), within the previous 10 years with adult and/or pediatric patients. *Registry eligible is demonstrated by the presentation of proof at the time of job application in the form on an Admission Notice from the ASCP that an application and eligibility documentation have been submitted and approved for PBT examination scheduling. Must provide official notification to The MetroHealth System of a passing score on the PBT examination within 1 month of the ASCP's Admission Notice expiration date. Demonstrates basic phlebotomy techniques with use of sterile techniques and standard equipment (i.e., vacutainer tubes, needles, needle holder, butterfly, syringes, and tourniquets). Professional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Professional customer service skills. Has a reliable mode of transportation and is willing and able to rotate locations within The MetroHealth System. Preferred: 2 years of Phlebotomy experience within the previous 2 years with adult and pediatric patients. Current Registered PBT/ASCP. Proficiency with computer keyboard, and able to type 20 WPM. Knowledge of medical terminology. Physical Requirements: May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and ambulate intermittently during the day. May need to sit or stand for extended periods. See in the normal visual range with or without correction. Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction. Finger dexterity to operate office equipment required. May need to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds on occasion. Ability to communicate in face-to-face, phone, email, and other communications. Ability to see computer monitor and departmental documents.
