Phlebotomist Scheduler/Dispatcher

SUMMARY:

Monitors daily activities and collection schedules for mobile phlebotomy services. Responsible for answering incoming telephone requests for scheduling of home phlebotomy, house calls and requests for long term care facilities.  Effectively utilizes communication skills in interpersonal interactions with customers, patients and families, physicians, fellow employees and leadership team members. Collects clinical laboratory specimens and performs tasks associated with patient registration, order entry and specimen processing with general supervision Actively advocates Health Network Laboratories’ core values and provides excellent customer service.

 

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this document is to describe the general nature and level of work performed by personnel as classified; it is not intended to serve as an inclusive list of all responsibility associated with this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Performs venipunctures. Collects other specimens and explains the proper collection procedures for specimens provided by the patient. Clarifies orders and pre-analytical test requirements when appropriate.

Makes accurate initial assessment of specimen suitability according to criteria outlined in the Laboratory Handbook and department Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to include the proper processing, storage and transport of specimens.

Maintains up-to-date knowledge of changes in specimen requirements and collection devices.

Maintains up-to-date knowledge of all registration, scheduling, dispatch and tracking software.

Answers incoming telephone requests/inquires for Home Phlebotomy, House Calls, and Long-Term Care Facilities and schedules mobile phlebotomy staff accordingly. Utilizes effective communication skills in interpersonal interactions with customers, patients and families, physicians, co-workers and leadership team in a positive and professional manner.

Assists in the orientation/training of new staff members.

Provides on-call and mobile service as required.

 Participates in the Continuous Service Improvement and continuing education programs.

 Properly records and documents necessary data on expense reimbursement (mileage reimbursement) data sheet or electronically utilizing scheduling/tracking software.

 Provides factual, objective documentation to management pertaining to deviations from established policies and procedures.

 Actively promotes HNL Lab Medicine’s values and exhibits excellent customer relations in anticipating customer needs in all interactions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A.         Education/Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and 6 months to 2 years related experience and/or training preferred.

B.         Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Bilingual and able to read, write and speak Spanish proficiently may be required based on service location.

C.         Math Ability:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

D.         Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

E.         Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software.

F.         Certificates and Licenses:

A valid driver’s license from the state that the employee resides as well as a clean driving record.  Must be accessible to appropriate and reliable transportation to perform essential duties and responsibilities. CPR Certification encouraged but not mandatory.
