Role: Phlebotomist

Team: Tech-Enabled Managed Services (TEMS) - Thibodaux Ambulatory Clinics

Location: Thibodaux, LA

The Phlebotomist is responsible for registering all patients appropriately, obtaining blood and other specimens for the purpose of laboratory analysis.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Registers all patients in a courteous manner.Enters correctly the patient’s demographic and insurance information into the computer system.Order correct test/procedure via the Health Information system.Draws blood from patient and returns test tube to the Laboratory Department.Requests/orders supplies as necessary.Maintains test trays and working area in sanitary condition.Records phlebotomy’s in logbook.Assists the medical technologists and office personnel as necessary.Performs other duties as assigned.

Provides prompt, courteous service to all internal and external customers.  Prioritizes and addresses customer needs and demands in a professional manner, providing follow-up and developing cooperative relationships.Identifies opportunities and recommends methods to improve customer service, work processes and financial performance.  Assists in design and implementation of quality improvement initiatives on departmental and organizational levels.Assists team members in completion of tasks and assignments to ensure continuity of service.  Orient new co-workers and actively support team development.

Is involved in providing patient care for people of the following age group:

Young Adult (15 years – 24 years)Adults (25 years – 64 years)Geriatrics (65 years and older)

QUALIFICATIONS:

Educational and/or Professional Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED preferred. Graduate of a Phlebotomy training program required or in lieu of education must have a minimum of 2 years phlebotomy experience required.

Other Special Training/Skills:

Phlebotomy certification preferred but not required Must possess good interpersonal skills so that communication with patients puts them at ease.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

No direct line of supervision.

CONTACTS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE ORGANIZATION:

SCHEDULE:

Typical hours are Monday through Thursday 8:00a.m. to 5:00pm, Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00pmp.m.   Adjustments to your schedule may include days, .

HAZARDS:

Job duties will include tasks, which have the potential for daily exposure to patient blood/body fluids.Daily exposure to sharp objects and latex.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

[Note: In terms of an 8 hour day (shift length), “Occasionally” equals 1-33%, “Frequently” equals 34-66%, and “Continuously” equals 67-100% of the time].

Constant standing and walking.Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling 10 pounds plus.Occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching twisting, ladder climbing, and stair climbing.Must be able to see (near and far), hear, talk, have use of right and left hands, have dexterity in fingers.

Information Security and Compliance Responsibilities:

Maintain compliance with training directives required by the organization pertaining to Information Security, Acceptable Use Policy and HIPAA Privacy and Security.Adhere to and comply with the organizations Acceptable Use Policy.Safeguard information system assets by identifying and reporting potential and actual security events to the organizations Security and Compliance Officers.
