Phlebotomy Tech

JOB SUMMARY

The phlebotomist possesses and maintains appropriate knowledge and skills regarding specimen collection for patients of all ages.  They practice appropriate specimen collection from veins, capillary beds or other within scope specimen collections as defined by established standards and procedures. Admits and orders laboratory work in computer system.  Performs laboratory clerical functions. Performs all duties and tasks with the Patient’s First philosophy and attitude of good customer service.                                                                                                                                                                                                                              

PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS includes the following, other duties may be assigned:

Specimen Collection: Ensures integrity of all samples through proper patient identification, labeling, and appropriate tubes and techniques.  Collects routine, timed, ASAP and STAT specimens and delivers to laboratory sections.  Makes routine rounds for collection. Instructs patients and other healthcare professionals in the proper collection of samples. Point of Care testing:  Performs waived Point of care testing as appropriately trained and follows established procedures. Quality Control: Performs all daily checklist duties, (i.e. temperature checks, H20 quality) and Standards of Performance. Prints and does follow up on Collection summary at beginning and near end of shift.

 

Specimen Processing (for both In-house and Reference laboratory): Prepares samples and paperwork, notifies couriers as appropriate, maintains paper report file, and processes in computer system.  Able to research and provide information on turnaround time, availability, status and charges. Order Compliance:  reviews orders to confirm compliant information is present including but not limited to provider, diagnosis, test order and any pertinent provider instructions before specimen collection Established procedures are followed for evaluating and presenting any required information to patients as required by insurance prior to specimen collection. Supplies:  Stocks laboratory draw areas and trays daily or as needed.  Assists in inventory, restocking and ordering supplies.  Fills orders from physician offices.  May have responsibility for inventory, supply storage, and   laboratory charge entry and review thereof, dependent on level of   experience and ability. Safety:  Follows all facility and laboratory safety policies, including, but not limited to shipping and handling of biohazard samples, chemical safety, and/or infection control methods.  Training:  Assist with training new employees or students as assigned by supervisor or manager. Clerical Functions:  Answers phone, takes phone orders, calls results, admits clinic samples and places orders.  Is knowledgeable about all Patient Inquiry, Front Office, Send Out, Central Processing and print functions of LIS.  Picks up and distributes mail and types internal memos and forms.  Compiles and tabulates statistical data as directed. Additional Duties: Participates in laboratory teams, innovative projects, educational requirements, regulatory survey preparation and assignments as directed. Presents a professional image in all patient and coworker interactions.

 

JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education

 

High school diploma or equivalent required.  Completion of a phlebotomy training program or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.

                                                                                                                                                                               

Training and Experience

 

One year of phlebotomy training experience preferred. Strong attention to detail, ability to work in a team or independently, effective communication skills, and adaptability and flexibility within a fast-paced high-quality environment.                                                                                                                                                                                                   

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

 

Active Washington State MA Phlebotomy License required or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
