Provides information on the intent, applicability, and survey of standards in response to inquiries from internal and
external customers within specified turnaround times to provide excellent customer service. Provides support in
the accreditation review process, as well as participates as a consultant in the development and revision of
standards and survey process. Serves as faculty for surveyor and other education programs and represents the
Joint Commission as liaison to various professional organizations. Serves as a mentor/coach/leader to the Life
Safety Code Specialists and provides additional support to accredited organizations and consultants. Is an active
member of the Healthcare Environment: Technical Advisory Council (HE: TAC).

 

This is a hybrid role requiring a minimum of 2 days each week (detemined by the department) in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois

Responsibilities

Position Accountabilities:
• Provides internal support to the Joint Commission’s various departments, including the Division of Healthcare
Improvement (DIVHI), the Standards Interpretation Group (SIG), Office of Quality Monitoring (OQM), Division of
Accreditation and Certification (AO) including various SBUs, Division of Standards and Survey
Methodology(DSSM) and Joint Commission Resources (JCR).
• Provides support to the Accreditation Decision process including surveying, scans, clarifications, adverse
decision review, review of corrective actions, presenting adverse survey results to the to the Accreditation
Committee, and participating in Review Hearing Panels (RHP) and Final Resolution Actions. Serves as contact
for surveyors’ onsite when determinations need to be made regarding the triggering of potential decision rules
including but not limited to immediate threat to health and safety
• Develops and participates in education activities supporting external customers, such as accredited
organizations, JCR/JSN/JCI staff and consultants. This support will be use different venues including FAQs,
Media Relations, Speakers Bureau, advocacy partners (i.e. Liaison Network), Joint Commission Resources
(including articles and educational events) as well as other opportunities. This may occur during normal
business hours or during evening/weekend hours to accommodate the participants.
• Develops and participates in education activities supporting internal customers such as surveyors (i.e., NFRO
and AEC), SIG Staff, and Account Executives. Education through telephone and electronic communication,
correspondence, faculty presentations for surveyors and selected field education programs, conferences and
other speaking engagements. This may occur during normal business hours or during evening/weekend hours
to accommodate the participants. Provides assistance to the orientation process of those assigned, as well as
new surveyors (including Life Safety Code Specialists). Assures that the learning needs of the individual are
identified and met. Military Fellows are provided opportunities to learn Joint Commission processes.
• Serves as evaluator and consultant to accredited organizations as assigned in review of the annual periodic
performance review (PPR) through scheduled conference calls. Reviews annual PPR submissions and
contacts organizations with problematic Plans of Action and Measures of Success, whether or not a conference
call is requested. Assists the Standards Interpretation Group in this process. Serves as coordinator and
customer advocate in areas associated with the Statement of Conditions (SOC) including the Basic Building
Information (BBI), the Plan for Improvement (PFI) and extension requests. Resolution in documented in the
History Audit Trail.
• Provides information on the intent, applicability, and survey or standards in response to inquiries from internal
and external customers within specified turnaround times to provide excellent customer service. Takes the
opportunity to provide examples to accredited organizations based on their expertise. Assists the Standards
Interpretation Group in this process. Participates with Program Executive Directors. PTACs, and other program
specific initiatives, providing standards knowledge and expertise. Develops and manages the content in the
Department of Engineering section in the Joint Commission website. The Engineer is an active member of the
Healthcare Environment: Technical Advisory Council (HE: TAC).
• Serves as Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) conducting Life Safety Code building analysis regarding granting
Traditional Equivalencies or Fire Safety Evaluation System (FSES) equivalencies. Reviews drawings and
technical specifications information, confirms mathematical calculations in submittals to determine adequate
alternative Life Safety Code features exist.
• Serves as a resource to accredited organizations and consultants specific to the National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA) body of codes, including but not limited to 101-2012, 99-2012 NFPA 70-2011 (NEC).
Serves as a resource to surveyors, accredited organizations and consultants specific to OSHA, EPA, FDA, DOT,
ANZI and other agency requirements reflected in the Environment of Care Chapter. Assists various advocacy
groups and represents the Joint Commission to other agencies including CMS, ASHE, AAMI, NFPA, FGI, etc.
providing standards knowledge and expertise. Provides support to the DC office.
• Provides support to the Director of Engineering during departmental budget and capital development (and
other special requests for resources). Process improvement activities and other areas to assist in supporting
the Division of Healthcare Improvement and other divisions of the Joint Commission. Also assists the Director
to plan, manage, and implement departmental activities that respond to the Corporate Strategic Directives.
• Completes assessment and metric tools tracking performance and evaluates performance against established
measurement strategies. Performance will be assessed through a variety of management data, feedback from
other departments and customers, and direct observations.
• Leads or participates in special projects or task forces as assigned utilizing RPI tools and techniques as
required.

Qualifications

• Healthcare Facilities Management experience with three to five years of progressive, leadership or supervisory
experience, including experience in managing diverse multi-disciplinary teams of specialists. Minimum
bachelor’s degree (Master’s Degree or equivalent preferred) with recognized certification (i.e. CHFM, CFPS,
CHSP).
• Demonstrated customer service skills, including interpersonal skills related to effectively interacting with
internal and external customers, sometimes in sensitive situations.
• Demonstrated presentation and analytical skills. Ability to assess educational needs and develop strategies to
resolve.
• Demonstrated ability to function well in a fast-paced, highly stressed and visible environment.
• Strong computer skills preferred, including familiarity with databases, graphics, and word processing.
