Physician, General Surgeon

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the General Surgeon will provide comprehensive patient assessment, treatment planning, conduct pre-surgical consultations, perform surgical procedures, onsite emergency services, upper and lower GI endoscopy services, maintain accurate patient records, collaborate with various departments, and adhere to all laws and regulations. The General Surgeon will participate in various quality improvement activities. The General Surgeons practice the latest techniques, including minimally invasive endoscopic and laparoscopic surgical options and practice a full spectrum of general surgery cases, with a substantial GI endoscopic case load. WhidbeyHealth is a level 4 trauma center with a low volume of general surgical trauma evaluations and procedures that the surgeon should be comfortable providing.  WhidbeyHealth General Surgeons are expected to be emotionally resilient with the ability to communicate effectively and must have the physical stamina to cope with the demands of performing surgery. To ensure success, our General Surgeons should have superb organizational skills and the ability to lead and manage a team effectively while working under pressure. Must also have a high degree of manual dexterity, good hand-eye coordination, and excellent visuospatial awareness.

Call requirements vary based on hospital need, typically a manageable on-call schedule of 1:3 to 1:4. All WH general surgeons must have a MD or DO degree, be Board eligible or Board certified in general surgery and able to obtain and maintain an unrestricted medical and DEA license in the state of Washington. A minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in practice is required and prior experience working in a rural setting is preferred.

 

PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS includes the following, other duties may be assigned:

Examining patients and making diagnoses to determine the need for surgery. Reviewing patients' medical history and planning the best procedure for treatment. Evaluating and advising patients on the risk involved with having surgery. Performing surgical procedures to prevent or correct injury, disease, deformities, and patient function while adhering to regulatory and ethical protocols. Following established surgical techniques during surgery. Prescribing preoperative and postoperative treatments and procedures. Fully responsible for deciding if operation is necessary, when to operate, and all technical aspects of the operative procedure. Directing and coordinating activities of hospital staff for proper patient care. Work closely with healthcare team to utilize and coordinate the services of Health Care Professionals in the management of the patient’s medical, psychological, and social problems. Overseeing all treatments prior to and post-surgery and identifying associated risks. Prepare and complete, in a timely fashion, the medical and other required records for all parties he/she/they admits or in any way provides care for the hospital or health care facility. Coordinating follow-up meetings with patients and monitoring their health condition after surgery or treatment. Maintaining the highest regard for patient dignity.

 

JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Graduate of an accredited medical school; MD or DO.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  

Training and Experience

Three (3) years’ experience practicing General Surgery. Gastrointestinal experience strongly preferred. Excellent time-management and organizational skills. Great management and leadership skills.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Board Eligible or Board Certified in general surgery. Able to obtain and maintain an unrestricted medical and DEA license in the state of Washington. BLS required.

 

OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

Computer skills including various databases and ability to learn new software(s). Support users on standardized reports and collaborate to meet regulatory/process improvement requirements for patient safety and care. Develop internal reports for meaningful impact, analysis, and improvement. Solid oral and written communication skills.

Salary Range: $375,000 - $400,000 / Eligible for a one-time incentive of up to $20,000
