Physician Assistant
The Department of Medicine is seeking a **_Physician Assistant_** to work collaboratively as a member of an advanced practice team to provide comprehensive care to critically ill patients in the Medical Intensive Care Unit and the Oncology Intensive Care Unit. **Specific Duties & Responsibilities** + Responsible for standardized, comprehensive care to patients who are critically ill with multiple medical conditions as well as primary oncological and hematologic processes. + Work collaboratively with physicians, fellows, residents, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, social workers, physical, occupational and speech therapists and consultant physicians within a multi-disciplinary team. + Obtain history and perform physical examinations on patients newly admitted to the ICU. + Triage patients to the ICU setting if necessary and provide critical care support to those teams during the day. + Knowledge of life support systems such as mechanical ventilation, continuous veno-venous hemodialysis (CVVHD), artificial nutritional support, and vasopressor support. + Orders and interprets laboratory tests, radiographic exams, and other diagnostic studies. + Performs bedside procedures including but not limited to: ultrasound-guided placement of arterial lines, central lines, peripheral IVs, and dialysis catheters; lumbar punctures, paracenteses, thoracenteses, NG/NJ tubes, point of care ultrasound, and other treatments as necessary. + Initiates or modifies routine, complex and emergent medication regimens and therapies. + Communicate with healthcare team members to ensure patient and organizational needs are met. + Assist with coordinating patients' discharge from the hospital to various settings. + Educate patients and families regarding the nature of their clinical problems, prognoses, and options for continued care. + Provides leadership, guidance, and teaching to junior NP/PAs, NP/PA students, and pulmonary fellows in the MICU and Oncology ICU. + Involved in departmental research initiatives. + Rotate between the Medical Intensive Care Unit and Oncology Intensive Care Unit as part of an Advanced Practice Team. + The APP will be granted affiliate staff privileges by the Johns Hopkins Hospital Medical Board; these privileges list specific tasks and are reviewed annually. **Additional Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities** + Must have advanced clinical skills and the ability to apply theoretical concepts as part of a multi-disciplinary healthcare team providing care to patients and their families. + Must have the ability to diagnose and implement a medical care plan for the short and long-term care of acute and chronic health conditions in the intensive care unit. + Be able to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to function effectively and adapt to a dynamic and often changing work environment. + Demonstrate excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. + Possess advanced interpersonal skills necessary to collaborate and communicate effectively with all interdisciplinary healthcare team members to enhance problem-solving in the patient's best interest. + Provide detailed and comprehensive documentation of all patient care-related services as part of the hospital medical record. + Must have general computer knowledge and the ability to use computerized medical information systems. **Physical Requirement** + Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time. + Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. + Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. + Communication skills using the spoken word. + The ability to see within normal parameters. + Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. + Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment. **Working Conditions** + Applicants must be willing to work 3 days/week on varying days over a 7 day work week, including weekends and holidays as required to meet patient care needs. _*This description is a general statement of required major duties and responsibilities performed regularly and continuously. It does not exclude other duties as assigned._ **Minimum Qualifications** + Bachelor's Degree, Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body, Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. + Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. + Maintain a Controlled and Dangerous Substance License in Maryland. + Maintain Federal DEA License. + Maintain ACLS certification. + Maintain BLS certification. + Completion of the Johns Hopkins Hospital credentialing process is required. **Preferred Qualifications** + Two years of acute/critical care experience preferred. + ICU experience .
