Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of a physician, the procedural Physician Assistant is responsible for providing varied medical services, which may include: obtaining complete medical history and performing a physical examination; ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and imaging studies; formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan; prescribing and/or dispensing medication; assisting in surgery or other invasive procedures; rounding on admitted patients; counseling patients and families, and other patient care duties. May be involved with a patient's medical care in any role which the attending physician deems proper and consistent with applicable law, hospital regulations, delineation of privileges, and the Physician Assistant's training, knowledge, skill, and experience.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:
1. Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
2. The Physician Assistant performs clinical duties in compliance with the scope of services defined by New York State Board of Licensed Physician Assistants. All professional activities of a physician assistant must be supervised by a supervising physician.
3. Working under the direction of the Director of Neurosciences is responsible for the initial assessment and admission of patients; assisting in the evaluation and preparation of patients for Neurointerventional procedures; acting as first and second assistant in the Neurointerventional suite; caring for patients following intervention and helping prepare patients for discharge.
4. Provides patient care management. Reviews history, performs physical assessment, formulates care plans, and follow-up. Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
5. Reviews and interprets routine diagnostic studies, including routine laboratory procedures, common radiological studies, and initial interpretation of interventional radiology imaging studies.
6. Presents and discusses the findings of the initial evaluation with the Physician to determine the treatment plan. Documents the treatment plan and writes appropriate orders.
7. Serves as first or second assistant in the neuro interventional suite. Prepares and drapes patient; accesses the vascular tree as needed; secures lines and dresses procedural sites; inserts intravascular catheters for monitoring purposes; performs related procedures, and post-treatment care as directed by neuro interventional physician.
8. Provides postoperative care of patients. Performs, as needed, basic care such as, phlebotomy, intravenous and intra-arterial line placement; arterial blood gas sampling; insertion, removal and management of catheters; insertion and removal of tubes; removal of staples and sutures, perform necessary wound care (i.e. debridement, dressing changes), etc.
9. Makes rounds to evaluate patients and writes progress reports.
10. Oversees the entire clinical experience to assure that there is coordination and consolidation of patient care plans and execution of those plans to tie the service together. Facilitates communication with other departments, rehabilitation, and care management team, to ensure the delivery of excellent cost effective and efficient patient care.
11. Consults with physicians or surgeons regarding the care of patients for more complex diagnosis.
12. Responsible for transcribing preoperative and postoperative orders including prescription medication, fluid orders, diets, activity levels, laboratory tests, x-rays, special procedures and other procedures, as authorized applicable law and department protocol.
13. May be authorized to write appropriate prescription orders, including those for narcotics, stimulants, and depressant drugs, and pre and postoperative orders as necessary.
14. Records and maintains legible, accurate and confidential patient medical records including initial evaluation, subsequent follow-up, unusual incidents or problems, and patient progress to provide complete and up-to- date information for ongoing reference and evaluation. Prepares discharge documentation and post[1]discharge instructions.
15. Educates patients and/or families about preventive and post-discharge care, medical issues, and use of prescribed medical treatments and/or medications.
16. Ensures treatment and consultations consistent with NCQA (National Committee for Quality Assurance), TJC (The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations), and federal and state regulatory standards.
17. Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided.
18. Utilizes hospitals cultural beliefs as the basis for decision making and to support the hospitals mission and goals.
19. Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
20. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree required
Must also be a graduate of a Physician Assistant Program.
Must be licensed as a Physician Assistant in New York State. Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is also required.
ACLS required If prescribing medications is included in clinical duties and privileges, DEA Controlled Substance Registration are required.
Neurosurgery or Neurointerventional experience preferred.
