Required:

Proof of current licensure by the Physician Assistants Board of Medical Board of California.A Physician Assistant - Cardiac Surgery shall have a Supervisory Physician who:Is a physician currently licensed by the State of California.Has obtained approval from the Board of Medical Quality Assurance to supervise a Physician’s Assistant.Is a current member in good standing of the Medical Staff of the Hospital and practices regularly at the HospitalThe Supervising Physician shall establish the Practice Agreement in writing, together with any supporting documentation:That the Supervising Physician accepts full responsibility for the performance of all professional activities of the Physician Assistant.That the Supervising Physician has obtained appropriate approval from the Medical Board of California to supervise a Physician Assistant for the particular type and scope of practice for which appliedThe Supervising Physician shall agree in writing that each applicant is required to have a current CPR support certification

Description

Desert Regional Medical Center is a 385-bed acute-care hospital classified as a stroke receiving center and level 2 trauma facility with an innovative, patient centered and evidence-based Rehabilitation Services Department.  Our compassionate team provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, including acute care rehabilitation, joint replacement & spinal surgery, neurosurgery, ICU, Telemetry, step-down care, skilled nursing, as well as outpatient therapy, hand and lymphedema clinics.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES

May perform duties and tasks only under the direction and supervision of the supervising physician, and only within the scope of their licensure. Such duties include:

Assists with hospital consults and be the first respondent when necessary Performs history and physical examinations, and requests and analyzes laboratory data to assess patient's needsPlaces Admitting Orders on behalf of Supervising Physician(s) including Ordering diagnostic labs for preop Documents patient progress and care to communicate information to other health care providers and ensure an accurate record of activity in compliance with established regulationsFunctions as an assistant to the surgeon in the operating room during surgical proceduresPerforms Endoscopic Vein Harvesting and/or Radial Artery Harvesting in the operating roomManages chest opening and closure, including multiple-layer surgical wound closures under the direction of the surgeonAssists the nursing team with preparing room and patient for surgery including marking the operative site. Pulls cases, assists with inventory controlReview of peri-operative lab results and imagingInvolved in postoperative care in critical care and stepdown units to include ventilator managementAssist the Surgeon with the insertion of the Intra-Aortic Balloon PumpActs as a liaison for referring physicians within the cardiothoracic surgical team Writes orders for diagnostic and lab studies, manages inventory of blood products, fluids, medications and progress notes under the supervision of the attending physician(s)Performs collaborative inpatient rounds on Cardiac surgery inpatients under the supervision of the attending physician(s)Maintains close communication with cardiologists, nurses, discharge planners and specialist for optimal patient management Provides detailed patient counseling and education on discharge expectationsAssists with discharge ordersEvaluates post-operative patients after discharge in outpatient clinic and provides patients with medical assistance and counseling under attending physician(s) supervision Keeps abreast of advancements in the surgical care field, attends case conferences and seminars, conducts round and continues educationPerforms the removal of chest tubes, central lines and drains
