Physician Assistant Nurse Practitioner Neurosurgery

Overview

Full time Neurosurgery Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Nurse position for the Neurosurgery department at Palisades Medical Center. This position will support the Neurosurgeon both in the outpatient and inpatient setting, especially with surgical cases. On call commitment required. 

Responsibilities
1. Obtains a detailed and accurate history, identifies problems, and presents all relevant information to the supervising physician. 2. Orders or prescribes medications: subject to the following restrictions and guidelines: a. Non controlled and controlled substances b. Orders or prescriptions must be administered in accordance with protocols or c. specific MD/DO directions 3. Assists a supervising surgeon in the operating room when a qualified assistant physician is not required, but a first assist is deemed necessary by the supervising surgeon. 4. Assists supervising physician in a procedure room when a qualified physician is present, but it is deemed that a qualified assistant physician is not needed. 5. Writes post-operative/post-procedure notes and orders with attestation from the supervising physician. 6. Performs as a first line person responsible for the post-procedure management of patients as requested by the primary physician. 7. Full scope of practice and allowed procedures is defined in our medical staff privileges. 8. Under the supervision of a physician(s) with appropriate privileges, performs comprehensive medical care of patient with multi-system illness and/or injury, encompassing all aspects of diagnosis and management. 9. Approaching a patient to elicit a detailed and accurate history, perform an appropriate physical examination, identify problems, record information and interpret and present reliable information to the supervising physician; 10. In case of pre-op surgical admission, insures all elements of pre-op evaluation are within acceptable range; 11. Suturing and caring for wounds including removing sutures and clips and changing dressings; 12. Assist in the delivery room, monitor labor, perform episiotomy and repair, manage spontaneous deliveries; 13. Providing patient counseling services and patient education consistent with directions of the supervising physician; 14. Assisting a physician in an inpatient setting by conducting patient rounds, recording patient progress notes, determining and implementing therapeutic plans jointly with the supervising physician and compiling and recording pertinent narrative case summaries; 15. Facilitating the referral of patients to, and promoting their awareness of, health care facilities and other appropriate agencies and resources in the community; 16. Collecting fluids for diagnostic purposes, including, but not limited to, blood, urine, sputum and exudates; 17. Placing and utilizing access catheters and tubes for diagnostic, therapeutic or interventional purposes, including, but not limited to, intravenous, arterial, nasogastric and urinary; 18. Performing minor surgical procedures such as simple excisions, incision and drainage; 19. Such other procedures suitable for discretionary and routine performance by PA¿s as designated by the Board of Governors; 20. In physician¿s absence, initiates life-saving therapeutic procedures, notifies physician immediately; 21. Recognizes clinical limitations and seeks appropriate and prompt assistance; 22. In the operating room, assisting a supervising physician as a first assistant or as a second assistant when deemed necessary by the supervising surgeon and when a qualified assistant physician is not required by N.J.A.C. 12.35-4.1 23. Participates in research trials, including collecting, aggregating and entering data. 24. Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (e.g., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visual impairment). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age,educational,literacy,etc.). 25. Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies manual. *Participating on the on-call service for hospital for Coverage is also a part of the responsibilities of the physician assistant position. 

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: 1. Successful completion of an approved Physician¿s Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission for Physician Assistants Education, Licenses and Certifications Required: 1. Physician Assistant License. 2. Controlled Dangerous Substances Physician Certification. 3. AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification. 4. Drug Enforcement Agency Certificate. 5. Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification. 6. Certification by the National Commission for Certified Physician 's Assistants (NCCPA) within one year of initial employment by the Medical Center.
