Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) – Critical Care Medicine APP Fellowship

Critical Care Medicine is seeking candidates for the 2025-2026 CCM APP Fellowship, a one-year clinical fellowship offering rotations through all ICUs covered by the UPMC Critical Care Medicine Department. Fellows will gain experience in the Magee Adult ICU and various ICUs at Presby, including Surgical Trauma, Cardiothoracic, Neurovascular, Neurotrauma, and Transplant ICUs. The program also includes special workshops and in-person simulation training. The APP group consists of approximately 30 full-time APPs working in these ICUs.

The UPMC Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship is a 12-month, postgraduate training program for Physician Assistants and Acute Care Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners interested in advanced training in adult critical care medicine. 

Based on the Department’s Multidisciplinary Critical Care Training Program (MCCTP) for physicians, CCM APP fellows will train alongside their physician counterparts to gain the in-depth knowledge and technical skills necessary to care for a full range of critically ill patients. Areas of critical care focus include general medical, general surgical, cardiothoracic, trauma, neurotrauma, neurovascular, OB/GYN, and transplant.

Responsibilities:

Consults with attending physician or designee upon the identification of significant unexpected changes in patient status. Performs selected invasive patient care procedures based on the patients’ needs as determined collaboratively by the physician supervisor and the Allied Health Credentialing Committee of the medical staff. Documents procedures, patient response/s and results in the patient record. As a graduate medical learner, follow work hour requirements set forth by the academic program as determined by the program director and the Medical Director within the work hour guidelines as set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Participates in an educational program provided by the UPMC business unit and is expected to satisfy the academic requirement of the program, as determined by the Program Director and the Medical Director. Under the direction and in consultation/collaboration with the attending physician or designee, diagnoses medical conditions and plans interventions, documents and communicates information to the health care team, and documents patient care services with a daily dictated or electronically generated note that conforms to documentation guidelines. Provides instructions, information and support to the patient/family regarding medications and treatments. Administers medications and injections in compliance with state law and hospital guidelines. Performs complete physical examinations and obtains complete medical history and records findings. Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures. Interprets and integrates data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan for critically ill or injured patients. Provides continuity of patient care in collaboration with other health care professionals as appropriate.
