GENERAL OVERVIEW:

This job identifies and manages medical and surgical problems within the Physician Assistant's scope of practice in a surgical setting.

Allegheny Health Network Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Physician Assistant to join our growing team. This is a unique opportunity to combine your clinical expertise with professional development focused on achieving and maintaining Joint Commission Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery.

This job requires Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to identify and manage medical and surgical problems within their scope of practice in outpatient, inpatient, and surgical settings. Travel may be required to cover clinics in other locations. The position requires individuals who are self-motivated with a passion for patient care, have a high attention to detail while working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Within the AHN department of neurosurgery, you’ll be part of a subdivided, smaller team of APPs and Physicians who work cross-functionally in all locations and as such, should be comfortable in such a setting.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Obtains complete medical history and physical data on patients.Performs physical exams, documents in the medical record, orders appropriate laboratory & diagnostic procedures and established presumptive diagnosis as defined in the written agreement between the PA and the supervising physician(s). Assists in the OR by serving as first or second assistant during surgical procedures.Provides appropriate patient care to include completing daily patient care rounds on surgical patients, recording patient medical history and physical assessment, developing therapeutic care plan, ordering diagnostic tests, interpreting test results, discharge planning and providing accurate medical record documentation for surgical patients.Communicates with attending physician regarding plan of care and involves physician in clinical decision making of any issues that are outside the Physician Assistant's knowledge base or scope of practice.Educates patients and family members regarding health and illness prevention, medication and treatment instructions, and recommends community resources as needed.Prepares written prescription orders for drugs as defined in the written agreement between the PA and the supervising physician(s).Triages patient telephone calls.Performs all other duties as assigned or required.

Clinical (Approximately 70%):

Provide comprehensive patient care collaboratively with our Attending physicians.Perform patient history and physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and develop treatment plans.Assist with surgical procedures, including pre-operative preparation, intra-operative assistance, and post-operative care.Manage patient follow-up appointments, provide education and counseling, and coordinate referrals.Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.Collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals, including nurses, therapists, and administrative staff.

Advanced Spine Certification (Approximately 30%):

Each week dedicated time will be allotted to pursuing, achieving, and maintaining the advanced certification in spine surgery through the Joint Commission (JACHO). This program is designed to recognize and validate the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals who provide care to patients with spine conditions.Participate in relevant training programs, workshops, and online courses.Maintain ongoing knowledge and skills in spine surgery and related fields.Work collaboratively with other professionals and specialties to streamline workflows for our spine patients as required by JACHO for certification.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum

BA/BS Degree in Physician Assistant Studies.Current PA Physician Assistant LicenseBoard eligible. PA-C required or board eligible (License and certification required within 90 days of employment.  Ongoing successful recertification (NCCPA) as a PA-C)CPR – American Heart AssociationAct 34 Criminal Background Clearance CertificateAct 33 Child Abuse Clearance CertificateAct 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate

Preferred

ACLS certification1-3 years’ experience.Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Physician Assistant, with a strong preference for experience in neurosurgery or orthopedic spine surgery.Excellent clinical skills, including patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning.Proficiency in surgical procedures and post-operative care.Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with patients, families, and colleagues.Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks efficiently.Energetic, adaptable, and driven to excel in a fast-paced environment.Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
