Responsibilities Examine, diagnose, and develop treatment plans and recommendations for patients seen. Recommend and refer patients to other Indian Health Service providers and Purchase Referred Care vendors within appropriate IHS guidelines. Rendering the initial assessment of which surgery patients which will require admission to the Indian Hospital. Providing on call surgical consultations for other members of the CIH staff, and providing surgical services on an emergency basis after regular hours. Providing and ordering medically indicated treatment, prescribing medication, initial interpretation of x-rays, suturing lacerations, and splinting uncomplicated fractures. Referring patients to routinely-scheduled clinics of the Indian Hospital Outpatient Department following an exam. Rendering assessments of which Emergency Department patients will require transfer to a tertiary care center and consulting the appropriate Emergency service physician. Shall complete all annual training required by the Clinical Director and IHS/HHS policies Family practice physicians. Completing a history, physical exam and admission orders for patients to be admitted to the IHS Comprehensive Indian Health Center. Charting and recording clinical data as per the Medical Staff By-laws. Treatment in a timely manner of patients presenting to the Emergency Room needing a surgical consultation. Competent surgical consultation care of patients of all ages. Performance of Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) in emergency situations. Shall be cognizant of COBRA/EMTALA regulations. All patients presenting to the surgical department shall be evaluated and stabilized. Provide general surgical procedures based on privileges. Provide endoscopic procedures based on privileges. Providing sedation for endoscopic patients based on privileges. Other duties as assigned Qualifications Must be Board Certified in or Board Eligible in Family Practice. Permanent, current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Must apply and be accepted as clinic/hospital associate member. Successful completion of a residency program in an approved Family Practice, Family Practice or Training Program. Shall provide a copy of documentation of physicians Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) and if needed Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificates. Must reside in the U.S. and be able to pass a Government Background Check. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Shall speak, understand, read and write English fluently and communicate with sufficient clarity to be understood by IHS personnel and patients. Surgeons shall be proficient in documentation in the IHS Electronic Health Record (EHR) and shall be responsible for entering appropriate data in the IHS EHR. Shall provide a copy of documentation of past insurance carriers during the past 10 years. Shall possess sufficient initiative, interpersonal relationship skills and social sensitivity such that he/she can relate constructively to patients of the Native American communities. Required to develop familiarity and abide by current policies, procedures, by-laws and regulation of the on-site clinical and medical staff. Family Practice/ Internal Medicine Physicians shall act in a thoroughly professional manner at all times. Able to work in harmony with other members of the professional and technical staff, in keeping with the established patterns of interaction at the IHS facilities sites where they are working. Possess tact and courtesy when interacting with patients and staff. Shall possess the proficiency to accurately and appropriately utilize E-mail, and enter/retrieve patient data in any and all EHR clinical application packages pertinent to the services being performed, such as Health Summary, Vitals, OERR (CPRS), and Text Integration Utility (TIU). Surgeons shall complete and electronically sign their encounter orders and progress notes daily within the parameters or requirements set forth in the local medical center policy. Proficient with MS Office Suite. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
