Downtown San Diego is located on San Diego Bay. Balboa Park encompasses several mesas and canyons to the northeast, surrounded by older, dense urban communities including Hillcrest and North Park. To the east and southeast lie City Heights, the College Area, and Southeast San Diego. To the north lies Mission Valley and Interstate 8. The communities north of the valley and freeway, and south of Marine Corps Air Station Mirmar, include Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Tierrasanta, and Navajo. Stretching north from Miramar are the northern suburbs of Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos, and Ranch Bernado. The far northeast portion of the city encompasses Lake Hodges and the San Pasqual Valley, which holds an agricultural preserve. Carmel Valley and Del Mar Heights occupy the northwest corner of the city. To their south are Torrey Pines State Reserve and the business center of the Golden Triangle. Further south are the beach and coastal communities of La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and Ocean Beach. Pont Loma occupies the peninsula across San Dego Bay from downtown. The communities of South San Diego (an Enclave), such as San Ysidro and Otay Mesa, are located next to the Mexico-United States border and are physically separated from the rest of the city by the cities of National City and Chula Vista. A narrow strip of land at the bottom of San Diego Bay connects these southern neighborhoods with the rest of the city.

Responsibilities Serve as a board-certified Internal Medicine Specialist providing care to adult patients who have both acute and chronic illnesses of all complexities.Serve as a core faculty member of the Internal Medicine Residency Program under the direction of the Program Director.Develop, implement, and assess the Internal Medicine Residency Program curriculum.Examine, diagnose, treat, and follow patients with a wide range of medical problems, including heart failure, kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes, liver disease, cancer, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and thyroid disorders.Order laboratory and radiologic studies appropriately to ensure high-quality, cost-effective care.Serve as an attending physician and leader of an inpatient medicine team, supervising, teaching, objectively evaluating, and providing consultation to other healthcare providers.Performs military medical board and Temporary Disability Retired List (TDRL) evaluations.Render urgent treatment and hospitalizes patients as required.Collaborate with other specialties and other services on complex patients requiring a multi-disciplinary approach.

Conditions of Employment:Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.A Personnel Security Investigation is required.This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. Basic Requirement for Physician (Internal Medicine):

Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must have provided education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts or proof of foreign equivalency with your application package.)

Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Residency Training for GP-14: Applicants must have successfully completed the required accredited residency training in the specialty of the position to be filled (Internal Medicine) and equivalent experience and training equal to at least 4 years. Experience may not be substituted for residency training that is required for the specialty identified.

Board Certification: Board certification and maintenance of certification is desired.

The salary determination process begins after the initial job offer is accepted. This consists of the Activity Compensation Panel adding base pay and market pay to determine your starting salary and this will be provided to you once approved. Salary for physician positions is based on a tier scale, determined by the position specialty, grade, and location.
