More than 67,000 students and 22,000 faculty and staff learn, work, and serve the public at Rutgers locations across New Jersey and around the world.  Posting Summary Rutgers University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) is seeking a Physician Specialist (Psychiatrist) for the Central Region facilities in Central Region of New Jersey. The Physician Specialist (Psychiatrist) provides direct clinical care to state prisoners. Functions collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams. Maintains effective communication with staff and administration.

Duties include: Provides assessments, direct clinical care and treatment planning to inmates. Conducts comprehensive psychiatrist assessments (demonstrating a review of the electronic record, psychotropic medications, history of mental illness, prior psychiatric hospitalization, suicidal, unusual, or bizarre behavior) for new admissions to UCHC’s Special Needs roster according to established timeframes. Is knowledgeable about and follows DOC and UCHC policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, emergency and non-emergency forced medication, management of potentially suicidal inmates, psychiatry services, and therapeutic restraint. Orders, initiates and interprets laboratory tests according to required time frames or as medically necessary including metabolic monitoring, mood stabilizer blood levels, thyroid function, AIMS testing, and other appropriate biochemical monitoring. Prescribes and renews medications that are deemed medically necessary within required time frames. Utilizes soporifics and benzodiazepines sparingly and rationale for their use is carefully documented. Conducts adequate and timely civil psychiatric commitment evaluations. Identifies individuals who need placement on “suicide watch” or higher levels of care. Adequately completes required peer reviews or other audits within required time frame
