Qualifications

Master s degree in Radiation Physics or equivalent field

Certified by the American Board of Radiology or American Board of Medical Physics in Diagnostic Radiological Physics or equivalent

Meets Federal and State MQSA requirements for a qualified medical physicist for mammography physics This includes the initial qualifications for digital and 3D mammography systems

Meets the New Jersey DEP requirements as a qualified medical physicist for the supervision of quality assurance programs for diagnostic radiology and computed tomography

Meets the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and New Jersey DEP requirements for a Radiation Safety Officer

Familiarity with Federal and State regulations for use of radioactive materials and machine sources of radiation

Meets Joint Commission standards for required testing of CT and MRI systems

Participates in routine inspections by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection Federal MQSA and Joint Commission

Coordinate annual calibrations of survey meters

Diagnostic Radiology

Responsible for required testing on radiographic, fluoroscopic CT and MRI equipment

Participation in periodic inspections by the NJ Bureau of X-ray Compliance

Mammography

Annual Medical Physics Surveys as required by MQSA and American College of Radiology

Participation in Annual MQSA Inspections

There are currently eight mammography units

Radiation Safety Health Physics Activities

General oversight of Radiation Safety Program

Annual Radiation Safety Audit

Coordination of radiation dosimeter distribution

Review of dosimeter reports and corrective action as necessary

Annual summary of radiation exposures

Maintain NJDEP radioactive materials license and update as needed

Review Radiation Safety Policies and Procedures and update as needed

Participate in meetings of the Radiation Safety and general Safety Committees

In-service education to staff annual and as needed

Patient dose calculations especially with regards to pregnancy

Patient counseling re radiation procedures

Answer questions from patients staff and physicians

Special Projects

ACR/IAC accreditation for CT MRI Mammography and Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

Evaluation of new equipment purchases

Shielding calculations and acceptance tests of new equipment
