UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits, and natural beauty. **The Department of Physics has an outstanding opportunity for a Physics Instrument Shop Manager (Manager of Program Operations) to join their team.** **POSITION PURPOSE** The Machine Shop within Physics Department serves as a resource to scientists and engineers at Physics, the University of Washington, and the community, by fabricating one-of-a-kind and production instruments. The Instrument Shop Manager is responsible for the daily operations of a 5 FTE research and development machine shop with an $850,000 annual budget. The Instrument Shop provides clients (primarily scientists) with both one-of-a-kind and production instruments. The manager is solely responsible for assessing each client’s request, estimating the amount of time and effort to complete the job, assigning the job to the staff persons whose abilities and experience best fit the request and scheduling the job. The Manager is the line supervisor for 5 FTE – selecting, hiring, evaluating and disciplining employees as necessary. The Manager ensures that the proper tooling and materials are on hand for each job, that machines are maintained and repaired and that the workplace is safe. Faculty, staff and students depend upon the Manager to review their ideas and ensure that the devices are buildable and suggest modifications that may result in a better instrument or make it easier to produce. **POSITION COMPLEXITIES** The Manager works closely with faculty, staff and students on their research projects. Many experiments involve instruments that are not available ‘off the shelf’ and are custom designed for each experiment or project **POSITION DIMENSIONS AND IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSITY** This position serves the Physics department and the University as whole. The positions interacts with many people from across campus, from other researchers to facilities. **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Scheduling and customer liaison (50%) + First contact with all clients whether faculty, staff, students or non-University clients. + Review job requests for completeness and drawings/schematics for accuracy and clarity. + Assist clients with development and preparation of final fabrication schematics from rough design drawings. + Consult with clients and recommend design, material or production modifications; consult with Instrument Makers for feedback. + Provide client with an accurate estimate (+/- 10%) for cost and time to completion. + Respond to client modifications/changes in job request and adjust scheduling and assignment as needed. + Keep staff and clients informed about job status and scheduling. + Assign jobs and machine time to staff; maintain electronic work order, scheduling and purchasing software. + Ensure that Instrument Maker timesheets are accurate and up-to-date. + Follow up on client satisfaction reports.Supervise five FTE Instrument Makers and part-time glass blower plus temporary staff (20%) + Assign and review jobs, hire new employees as appropriate, ensure that all employees have appropriate training in new techniques and machines, ensure that employees are trained and follow appropriate safety regulations, maintain professional and courteous team-oriented workplace. + Evaluate employees and recommend corrective action or employee recognition as appropriate.Supervise machinery maintenance and repair (5%) + Evaluate usefulness and efficacy of 1.2 million dollars of equipment; repair or surplus as necessary. + Keep current on changes in technology and new machinery and recommend new machinery purchases.Perform end of month labor time and billing reports (10%) + Reconcile end of month purchases and purchase orders.Purchase supplies and services (5%) + Purchase tooling, stock and other services as required to maintain efficient workplace. + Oversee annual inventory of equipment and stock.Coordinate with administrative staff (5%) + Provide assistance for annual costing proposal, quarterly reports and shop efficiency/billing. + Ensure that billing and general record keeping meet federal, state and university standards.Safety Maintenance (5%) + Maintain safe workplace as outlined by University, state and federal regulations. + Ensure employees follow applicable safety rules; maintain safety training records for staff and students. + Prepare and maintain incident reports as required. + Maintain own safety training and keep current on applicable safety regulations.Lead ResponsibilitiesThe Instrument Shop Manager is responsible for the daily operations of a 5 FTE research and development machine shop with an $850,000 annual budget. The Instrument Shop provides clients (primarily scientists) with both one-of-a-kind and production instruments.Supervisory ResponsibilitiesThe Manager is the line supervisor for 5 FTE – selecting, hiring, evaluating and disciplining employees as necessary. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS** + Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing, Engineering, or related field and four years relevant experience. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS** + Experience with both numerically controlled and manual machine tools. + Experience with CAD/CAM software. + Experience with a wide range of materials (metals, plastics). + Experience in R&D oriented shop. + Journeyman-level or equivalent experience in machine shop environment. + Experience with database driven software to manage business functions, including quoting, job scheduling, purchasing, labor reporting and invoicing. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS** + Experience with scheduling software; databases, billing software. + Experience supervising employees. + Experience estimating and scheduling in machine shop environment. + Experience as an Instrument Maker. + Experience in Solidworks and Camworks. + Experience with JobBoss. **Application Process:** The application process may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
