This Planner-level administrative position is within the Durham City-County Planning Department. It is a regular, full-time position that is fast-paced with quick turn-around review times, and although the focus of work is permit review, effective communication with the public and customers is a key component. Work is performed via computer and cloud services. Successful candidates must have prior experience with web-based applications and virtual communication platforms such as Zoom, Teams, Sharepoint, and Outlook, and must be willing and able to perform daily work within departmental databases and software applications. Prior urban planning, customer service, building inspection, and/or local government work is desirable, as well as experience reading zoning/tax maps, plans, and property records. Training and mentoring will be provided with respect to the application of zoning and development regulations. The ideal candidate will be familiar with zoning and site planning principals and construction. This person will effectively manage tasks, adhere to deadlines, foster productive working relationships, solve problems proactively, and provide exceptional customer service. Duties/Responsibilities + Primary responsibility will be to review building permits for zoning compliance. + Additional duties may include customer service interactions to help customers understand applicable regulations and navigate the development process, review other permits for zoning compliance, and involvement in cross-department projects as time would allow. + Other responsibilities include: + Coordination with other departmental staff; + Use of computer applications and permitting software; + Researching issues and resolving questions with the appropriate team members, + Updating databases, documenting comments, and communicating to customers throughout the review process. + Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned. Minimum Qualifications & Experience + Bachelor’s degree in planning, landscape architecture, geography, architecture, engineering, forestry, horticulture, arboriculture, landscape architecture, or urban forestry or a directly related field or equivalent experience . + Two years of professional planning or related experience. Additional Preferred Skills + Fluency in Spanish. + Ability to interpret plat maps, plot plans, land surveys, or similar maps and drawings. + Master’s degree in planning, engineering, or a directly related field is preferred. + AICP certified, or interest obtaining AICP certification. + Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and web-based GIS mapping and analysis software.
