Plant Science Research Assistant

Plant Science Department

Primary forces of Plant Science are qualitative and/or quantitative improvement of plants and plant products that are either currently used or will be used as raw material at our manufacturing facilities. We accomplish that by using a variety of research techniques that include traditional and modern plant breeding methods, agronomic management, chemistry analysis, and ingredients applications. Our team consists of department director, three project leaders (plant breeders), and four full-time employees that provide operational and technical support.

Core Responsibilities:

The responsibilities for this position will be related to a variety of seed lab and field research tasks including assistance with:

Yield plots seed preparation, planting, maintenance, and harvest.Small scale seed production in isolation plotsCorn nursery management - corn pollination/detasseling and hand harvestSeed processing and seed inventory management - drying, shelling, weighing, packing, and storage, and disposal of seed.Shipping seed to international counter-season nurseries and other domestic and international research collaborators.Operate and maintain all seed lab and field research equipment and obtain necessary knowledge and permits for any new equipment including but not limited to planters, sprayers, fertilizer applicators, combines, irrigation systems, trailers, semi-truck, drones, etc.   

Other Responsibilities:

Limited travel (10-15%) to both domestic and international research locations using company vehicle.Good work ethics, ability to lift 50lbs, ability to work in wet, hot, or cold conditions.Data management in Excel and other network platforms.Supervise and provide technical support to temporary employees while ensuring work is performed in a safe and efficient manner. Perform general maintenance of property at the research farm near Lebanon, IN. Complete documentation and follow all protocols for safety and compliance.Submit research invoices to Accounting Department.

Preferred qualifications:

Attention to detail, identify problems early, good communications, personal responsibility.Ability to obtain CDL, pesticide applicators, or drone pilot license.Ability to work flexible hours during the peak labor times. Strong aptitude to operate planting, harvest and other research equipment with complex electronics, GPS systems and data collection systems.3-5 years of experience in agronomic field and/or seed lab research Greenhouse, hydroponic, or growth-chamber experienceHigh school degree or BS degree in agriculture, horticulture, biology, or plant scienceRequired to pass a background check and MRV check to drive company vehicle.
