Plant Technician-Control Room Operator (CRO)
Talen Energy is seeking Plant Technician-Control Room Operator (CRO) candidates to join our Operations team at our Brandon Shores power plant, located in Baltimore, MD (Pasadena area). The Brandon Shores Plant is a fully scrubbed coal-fired generating station. We are looking for qualified candidates with over five years of work experience in the start-up, operations and shutdown of boilers, turbine-generators and auxiliary equipment. The position reports to the Shift Supervisor. The expected salary range for this position is $100,000.00 to $115,000.00 annually. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors as permitted by law. Successful candidates will also participate in Talen Energy’s Short-Term Incentive program. Operates boilers, turbine generators and auxiliary equipment by using remote controls, video display terminals (VDTs), keyboards, and plant rounds as needed. 2. Minimizes plant condition deviations from design values to achieve most economical plant heat rate. 3. Leads equipment or system problem identification and solving evolutions assuring quality inputs to the maintenance forces via maintenance requests. 4. Shuts down equipment for maintenance and coordinates work with electrical, mechanical, and instrument maintenance forces. 5. Ensures that appropriate safety lock out tag out procedures are followed. 6. Understands and follows plant emission guidelines for adhering to regulations. 7. Maintains station operating logs and prepares and logs maintenance request data. 8. Keeps instruction of plant operators’ current through periodic training classes and assists in the development of operators for future promotion. 9. Participates in the implementation and assessment of operator qualification standards. 10. Develops and follows operating procedures for plant equipment to ensure consistent and safe operation. **Skills/Competencies:** 1. Thorough knowledge of all operating duties at control room installations. 2. Must thoroughly understand the function of and closely observe many instruments and controls, in order to act quickly and correctly in emergencies. 3. Demonstrated ability to effectively organize and direct the activities of others. 4. Ability to build effective teams. 5. Is required to use market and business information to adjust operation when possible to improve profitability. 6. Ability to make decisions with high quality, accuracy, and timeliness. 7. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with all levels of plant personnel (i.e., peers, management, operations team), as well as external contacts. 8. Effectively utilizes operational, business and maintenance processes, ensuring adherence to management guidelines. 9. Technical abilities to work with plant simulator and plant equipment information to understand all facets of plant operations. **Education & Experience Required:** 1. Over five years work experience in the start-up, operations and shutdown of boilers, turbine-generators and auxiliary equipment. 2. Must be fully proficient in all plant operations. 3. Successful completion of all operations qualifications. **Licenses/Certifications Required/Preferred:** 1. Grade 1 Stationary Engineers License (preferred). 2. Valid Driver’s License and the ability to meet Company driving standards (required). **Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:** Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer, stamina to maintain attention to detail, despite interruptions, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen for long periods of time. Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. It may be necessary at times to visit power plants coal combustions byproduct landfills, or other potentially hazardous industrial locations, primarily for the purpose of evaluating compliance. At times, an individual may respond to environmental release situations. • Must satisfy respirator qualifications. • Shift worker subject to holiday and weekend work. Overtime may be required. • Interface with marketing & trading’s load dispatchers to provide the requested electrical generation and ancillary services. Physical Demands: At the Power Plant facility and in/out door environment, must be able to work in adverse conditions that may include, but not be limited to the following: For primary day-to-day duties, the employee is sitting in a temperature controlled control room and will not be exposed to excessive physical demands. Viewing computer monitors for long periods of time is expected, and typing on a keyboard is required often. While performing the duties of the job, the employee may also be required to climb stairs, ladders, and work on elevated platforms. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. • Must be able to lift 45 pounds overhead and 75 pounds from the floor to 36 inches. • Must be willing to travel to other facilities if needed. • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color distinction with vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. • Must be able to work around high voltage and heights. • Must have manual dexterity and ability to manipulate keyboards. • Must be capable of wearing respirators and working in dusty environments. On occasions employee may be required to work at heights to collect samples or conduct other environmental assessment, where guarding or fall protection is required. Mental Demands: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills, read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve complex problems, observe and interpret situations, use math and mathematical reasoning; deal with changing, intensive deadlines, and interact with internal and external clients. Must be able to concentrate while under time constraints. Plant Technician–CRO’s are frequently working by themselves, so confidence in themselves to make decisions and decisiveness is of critical importance. Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. As mentioned earlier the Plant Technician–CRO will spend many hours in a temperature controlled control room environment, however, at times the employee is exposed to outside weather conditions and wet or humid conditions. The employee may work near moving mechanical parts and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock and vibration. Exposure to hazards associated with power and hand tools, dust, fumes, high pressure steam, high temperatures and confined spaces; and may be regularly subject to external environmental conditions such as cold, heat dust, snow or noise and fumes from equipment or chemicals. Occupationally hazardous noise exposure may occur in the power plant or other locations where heavy industrial equipment is in use.
