What does a Platform Engineer do at Busuu?
As a Platform Engineer you will be working on a new and exciting initiative at Busuu. You will work on features from ideation, implementation, and release collaborating with all departments of the company. Once released to users your work will be seen by millions and from there you will measure, evaluate, and evolve what you just released.
Our platform runs in a distributed system architecture where development teams work with Node.js (TypeScript), following best coding standards and hexagonal architecture with Domain-Driven Design. We embrace event-driven architecture patterns using message brokers and event streaming. Our infrastructure is cloud-native, leveraging AWS services and following infrastructure-as-code principles. We practice DevOps and GitOps methodologies with a strong focus on automation and observability. Working at scale presents exciting challenges, and we're looking for someone passionate about solving complex problems and building robust, scalable solutions.
What makes a great Platform Engineer at Busuu?
Must-have skills:
AWS cloud expertise with focus on cloud-native services
DevOps mindset with CI/CD experience (GitHub, ArgoCD) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/Terragrunt)
Kubernetes expertise in container orchestration and cluster management
Network engineering skills including load balancers, CDN, Istio, and security patterns
Experience with observability platforms (OpenTelemetry) and distributed systems
Nice-to-have skills:
Python programming and Linux system debugging
Database administration (SQL, MongoDB, Redis)
Message broker and event streaming experience (Kafka)
Database performance optimisation skills
