We are hiring one (1) full time, permanent PLC Programmer (Control Systems Technician) position working from our Aurum location in Edmonton, AB.

The Control Systems Technician is accountable for PLC System configuration and programming under the direction of the Foreman, FCF Electrical & Instrumentation. This includes control system integration, maintenance, troubleshooting, system planning and enhancements, as well as design & programming in support of EPCOR’s Wasterwater Collection Services.

 

The Control Systems Technician is accountable to the Manager, FCF Electrical and Controls and operates within the context and prescribed limits established by the Manager, FCF Electrical and Controls.

 

What you’d be responsible for

 

Provide input to the Manager, Electrical and Controls plans and directions, and ensure on-going appropriate relationships with other positions.Ensure the delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance metrics as outlined in the APfR. Accordingly, ensure that:Safety Compliance training is current and completed as requiredPLC System operates at full availability and appropriate capacity to meet equipment, software, and user requirements. PLC System configuration and programming fully support operating and reporting compliance requirements for Wastewater facilities.Performing electrical and PLC repairs during work hours and in response to emergency calls after scheduled work hours, to expedite rectification of operational failuresPerform electrical maintenance and installationProviding feedback to Foreman and Manager of FCF Electrical and Controls on further improvement to design changes and preventative maintenance of control system

 

Under the direction of the E/I Foreman:

 

Respond to changes in processes and technological requirementsDay-to-day process control systems activities within the department and in conjunction with SCADA, Operations and Engineering which support process safety, process operability and economic viability.Maintain & troubleshoot as required by operations, maintenance and engineering functionsProgram, troubleshoot, analyze, tune, modify and configure control systems using relevant software.Design, Configure & program various digital bus systems – including Foundation Fieldbus, DeviceNet, Profibus, and Modbus.Configure & modify database to meet PLC operational requirement.Coordinate programming analysis, tuning and modifications to the PLC completed by the outside contractors or consultants to ensure work conforms to EPCOR standards.Provide E&I group training in the use of system tools for troubleshooting and system analysis.

 

Under direction of the E/I Foreman, complete project work on Capital/Operations integration:

 

Participate in acceptance testing on new instrumentsProvide input to recommended instrument purchases and specification preparation · Participate in E&I instrument, loop, tuning, system and PCN/PCS network infrastructure (Ethernet & fibre) acceptance.Review, test and approve PCS logic and changes to PCS logic.Contribute to design of digital, electronic, pneumatic, electrical and mechanical instrumentation for specialized applications.Obtain quotes for equipment purchase or fabricationAssist contractors and provide technical support as required for Maintenance and Capital Project workParticipate in construction commissioning and acceptance testing of new facilities, identify deficiencies and review final PLC programming prior to acceptance of new or upgraded facilities to ensure it meets current standards and control narrative requirements.Assist on-site engineering staff, consulting engineers and contractors with projects by providing technical support.Program, commission, wire and install PLC, as well as electrical and instrumentation equipment on upgrade projects and new facilities.

 

Documentation:

 

Maintain department I&C records, PLC program and instrument setpoints changesProvide updates to facility documentation (P&IDs, PFDs, equipment specifications, SOPs, Standard Maintenance Work Instructions & Manuals Maintain digital records (IVARA data, MS Excel, MS Word, etc).

 

Maintenance of PLC equipment:

 

Power Logic power quality monitoring equipment.Analog & Digital PCS - Hardware and SoftwarePLCs · LAN cable, hubs & switches, Fiber optic cableControllers with PID loop tuning and installation

 

Promote a safe work environment and support achievement of a “zero injury culture” by:

 

Focusing on peer-to-peer safety discussion and intervention.Reviewing hazard risk assessments and safe-work plans.Completing worksite inspections and observations.Ensuring full compliance with PPE requirements.Participate in the incident management process by reporting, investigating and initiating corrective action for safety, environmental and business impact incidents.

 

What’s required to be successful

 

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent combination of training and experience.Possess a valid Alberta Journeyman Electrician and Journeyman Instrument Technician Certificates. Single trade ticket with CET also considered.Possess a valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator Licence.A Driver Abstract (5 year commercial type) will be required.Appropriate instrumentation education and/or experience:Rockwell automation (PLC 5, CompactLogix)Matrikon data ManagerLevel control/monitoring (MultiRanger, SITRANS, VEGAPULS)Ability to interpret technical plans and specifications.Considerable knowledge of the standard methods, principles, practices, tools and equipment of the E&I trades.Safe work habits and understanding of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the E&I trades.Specialized courses in Distributed Control Systems, PLC networks, cyber security and relational databases.Proficiency in planning, organizing and scheduling workEffective decision-making and technical problem-solving skillsKnowledge of:Fundamental and advanced process control theory and strategyVarious bus architectures and protocols (Fieldbus, DeviceNet, Profibus, Modbus)Allen-Bradley PLC system hardware, software and bus systems (RS-232, Data Highway-PlusMaterials, methods, practices and equipment used for process control (measurement, transmitters, valves) and the ability to tune simple controllers and complex loops.Alarm management
