Job Description

Location: Chicago, Lurie Streeterville Location

General Summary:    

Maintains the hospital’s plumbing and piping utility systems and equipment to keep these systems and equipment operating safely, efficiently, and reliably to avoid unscheduled shutdowns and extend the operating life of equipment. 

Essential Job Functions:

1.    Utilizing state plumbing license, performs annual inspection and testing of back flow prevention PRZ valves. 
2.    Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on the hospital’s plumbing systems.  Maintains inspection and testing records.  Evaluates the condition of plumbing systems and recommends repair or replace actions.  Coordinates maintenance and repairs with outside contractors.
3.    Responds to emergency malfunction events. Accesses situation, and takes action to stabilize situation to avoid further damage and make safe.  Documents off-normal incidents.  
4.    From blueprints and diagrams plans, estimates and recommends materials and costs to repair or install new plumbing devices and installs such devices.
5.    Identifies and evaluates affected areas for proposed construction.  Critiques construction plans and recommends service tie-in locations.  Investigates plumbing service shutdowns and initiates shutdowns and reactivations.  Oversees the installation of plumbing services and fixtures by outside contractors and records deficiencies on punch list.  Participates in system start-up and commissioning.
6.    Utilizes and maintains tools associated with the plumbing trade. 
7.    Maintains plumbing supply and parts inventories, fills out purchase requisitions.  
8.    Records time and materials expended on computerized work order system. Following manufactures and regulatory specifications reviews and updates plumbing systems and equipment preventive maintenance records and schedules. 
9.    Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

1.    High school diploma or the equivalent with coursework in blueprint and equipment schematics reading is required.
2.    Holds a current Illinois plumbing license.  Successfully completed a plumbing apprentice program.  
3.    A minimum of three years of experience as a plumber is required.  Experience in a health care or comparable institutional setting preferred.
4.    Maintains a valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
5.    Working knowledge of building and life safety codes with specific knowledge of state and city plumbing codes applied to health care occupancies required.    
6.    Knowledge of and practices personal safety, hospital infection control and life safety procedures required.  Utilizes personal protection equipment, including: eyesight, respiratory and hearing protective devices.
