Summary The main location for this position is at the Wake County Outpatient Clinic of the Durham VA Health Care System, located in Gamer, NC. The Podiatrist performs direct medical, surgical and telehealth care in podiatry. Duties: The main location for this position is at the Wake County Outpatient Clinic of the Durham VA Health Care System, located in Gamer, NC. The Podiatrist performs direct medical, surgical and telehealth care in podiatry. Travel, up to 8 days a month, may be required as surgery may be done off-site at the Durham VA Medical Center in Durham, NC. The incumbent must have authoritative knowledge in podiatry, preferably as evidenced by Board Certification or by Board Qualification by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery or by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. The Wake County Podiatrist specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of foot and ankle conditions through medical and surgical means, and includes the following duties and responsibilities: Completion of history and physical examination with an emphasis on diagnosis and foot/ankle pathology, and identification of related systemic conditions. Management of podiatric pathology. Prescription of pharmaceuticals and therapeutic devices, (orthotics, prosthetic devices, plaster casts, immobilization devices, etc.) Appropriate consultation, referral and co-management of patients with complicating systemic conditions. Provides professional advice to medical staff upon request with regard to professional management of patients being treated. Health promotion and disease prevention. Outpatient Podiatry medical and surgical services. Inpatient Podiatry medical and surgical services coverage as needed. Ongoing prevention, in-service, and patient education programs. Direction, teaching, and training of residents and students enrolled in training programs. Screens all Wake County podiatry consults for triage to determine if work up is complete and how urgently they need to be seen. Screens podiatry consults for need for CITC initial requests and renewal of CITC to determine if work up is complete and if CITC care given is appropriate. Demonstrates the ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers, patients support service staff, nursing staff, physicians and other DVAHCS staff. Incumbent will display a cooperative attitude and will effectively work together to implement the organization's missions and goals. Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to patient privacy and FHPAA regulations. Responsible for all administrative activities normally associated with patient care such as consult review and completion, completion of patient medical records, encounters, and other documents necessary in the operation of an inpatient/outpatient treatment clinic. Maintains required continued Medical Education through conferences, reading programs or other approved CME events. Completes all mandatory education in TMS and training and competency validation. Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Podiatrist Basic Requirements Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~ Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires mostly periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients/residents who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on stakeholder needs.
