Point of Care Specialist Laboratory
Job Description

Overview 

Responsible for monitoring, surveillance, and reporting all point-of-care testing performed in all hospital areas. Writes protocols, develops quality assurance KPIs and oversees quality control. Integrates and relates data generated by the various units of point-of-care testing, comparing data to lab standards while making judgments regarding possible discrepancies, and develops solutions to problems relating to point-of-care testing. Responsible for directing the technical competency programs for point-of-care testing and establishing a correlation between the new and existing point-of-care testing methodologies with the clinical laboratory instrumentation. Must maintain a flexible work schedule to accommodate oversight of testing on various shifts and multiple sites.  

Key Responsibilities 

Supports laboratory leadership in preparing the department budget for point of care based on department needs. Ensures that point-of-care operations are continually assessed for quality and that, if necessary, changes are made to meet hospital and departmental targets/goals. Ensures hospital and laboratory staff are properly trained to perform and document point-of-care testing.  Assures ongoing readiness of point-of-care testing sites throughout the system for inspections. Provides support for inspections. Develops, reviews, and revises system and departmental point of care testing policies and procedures in the required format and ensures they are current and reflect all relevant accreditation standards. Assures policies and procedures are available to all personnel. Responsible for ensuring all internal training documents/modules are current. Assesses technology and methods for point-of-care testing applications and works with the administrative director to implement changes. Maintains data systems and equipment used in the point-of-care testing program.  Recommends improvements and participates in decisions to improve patient care and reduce expenses.  Ensures adequate supply chain management of point-of-care testing supplies for assigned locations.  Assures that audits of point-of-care testing sites are performed at the system facilities to assure compliance with point-of-care accreditation requirements. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications 

Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology preferred or related science. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. ASCP or equivalent certification required. 

Experience:  Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a clinical laboratory is required. Prior experience in point-of-care oversight is preferred.
