Job Description

Avery Dennison is hiring a Polymer Development Scientist with proven skills in polymer design and acrylic polymerization to expand our Performance Polymer Division’s (PPD) technical team at our production and research facility in Mill Hall, Pennsylvania.

Reporting to the Global R&D Manager, this scientist will support development of acrylic polymers for the global pressure-sensitive adhesive market. You'll lead technical teams, innovate, and guide new product development from start to finish!

Representative Activities

Conduct hands-on lab scale polymerizations and formulated prototypes of adhesives and coatingsSetup and conduct experiments, perform relevant application and analytical testing in the laboratory, following set procedures. Work is typically peer reviewed for soundness of technical judgment, overall accuracy and adequacy.Translate new product requirements into actionable work plans.Understand and scope experimental design objectives, gather and analyze data, develop findings, prepare technical reports to be shared both inter-organizationally and with external customers.Transfer knowledge to project teams and R&D community via presentations, technical reviews and day-to-day interaction.Working closely with other departments, lead the scale-up of new adhesives from laboratory through pilot and to full scale productionWork closely with project team members and key partners of other departments, including marketing, quality, process engineering, operations and supply chain to ensure favorable R&D project outcomes and product launches.Coach technician and lab support colleaguesConduct travel (up to 15%) for the purposes of gathering customer needs, performing experimental trials and team collaboration.

Qualifications

Education:

(minimum) Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science or related field

Experience:

Experience in synthesis, formulation and scale-up of emulsion and solution acrylic polymersKnowledge of formulation of solvent, emulsion, and hot melt adhesive systems is advantageousAbility to manage multiple technical projects simultaneously and work in a fast-paced environment, managing changing priorities.Experience in commercial product development within the adhesives or coating industryThe ability to assess and comprehend, often poorly defined, customer requirements and translate them into actionable strategies for adhesive design and testingProven knowledge of analytical techniques and materials characterization methods
