Starting salary depends upon qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of experience or training in the installation, maintenance, or repair of hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and/or electronic systems in either a commercial or industrial setting; OR
One year of experience or training in the maintenance or repair of computer-driven heavy equipment.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
New employees must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC).

To train in the maintenance, testing, and repair of computer-driven cranes used for loading and/or unloading ships.

Port Crane Technician Description of Duties:
This position serves in the crane department of the Port of New Orleans Maintenance Division and reports directly to the Port Crane Supervisors. This position serves as a Port of New Orleans, Port Crane Technician in container crane operations and maintenance as part of the Planning and Facilities Crane department. This position is part of a career progression group.

This position participates in the required PORT training program and obtains additional training in order to facilitate the efficient performance duties and/or required tasks. This is a safety sensitive position that requires random drug screening throughout the year. The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid Louisiana’s Driver’s License, Class E and be knowledgeable and capable of the safe operation of various types of equipment required to fulfill the needs of the position and the PORT. The incumbent is required to have knowledge of the use of UHF radio, which requires proper radio etiquette. The incumbent shall utilize a telephone, cellphone, two-way communication device, computer, and e-mail to facilitate communications if required. The incumbent must be able to perform duties many times without direct supervision and be knowledgeable enough to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise
10% Port Crane Operation for setup / Maintenance / Testing: Incumbent is responsible for the safe operation of the container during all setups for incoming berthing of ships, maintenance, and testing functions.
60% Port Crane Electrical Repairs: Incumbent is responsible for performing all electrical maintenance on the Port’s shup to shore container cranes and rubber tire gantry cranes. This includes, but is not limited to inspection, testing, routine maintenance, periodic maintenance, preventative maintenance, repairs and replacement (all or in part) to all electrical systems. This includes, but is not limited to complex electrical / electronic systems, computer programs, programmable logic controllers, GE DC 2000 / Cutler Hammer GH 95 / Mitsubishi drive systems, Allen Bradley / Siemenns programmable logic controllers, Heavy industrial / solid state / analog and digital / variable and single speed static and dynamic controlled systems, Ethernet cables, Fiber optic cables, electronic cards, motor starters, coaxial cables, proximity limit switches, circuit breakers, bus interfaces and reversing contractors. Incumbent uses manuals, schematics, and diagrams for inspection and troubleshooting. Uses standard tools such as volt meters, WATT meters, and related equipment. Utilizes lap top computer to interface communications with spreader bars and other equipment. Incumbent may be required to assist and/or monitor specializes contractors performing repairs to Port equipment.
20%Port Crane Mechanical and Hydraulic Repairs: Incumbent is responsible for performing all mechanical and hydraulic maintenance on the Port’s ship to shore container cranes and rubber tire gantry cranes. This includes, but is not limited to inspection, testing, routine, periodic, and preventative maintenance, repairs and replacement (in part or all) to all mechanical and hydraulic systems. This includes, but is not limited to greasing / lubricating all moving parts and equipment as required, maintaining and repairing structural components of container cranes, spreader bars, open and closed gear boxes, changing of large industrial wire ropes, installation of bearing, rollers, and sheaves, maintenance and repair of large diesel engines and maintenance and repair of multi-function hydraulic control units and systems. Incumbent may be required to assist and/or monitor specialized contractors performing repairs to the gangways.
5%General Crane Department Facility Maintenance: The incumbent is required to assist other maintenance forces in the general upkeep of the Crane and RTG maintenance facilities as directed by the supervisor.
5%Other Duties, Including Emergency Support: Incumbent is required to perform a variety of tasks and assignments, as directed by the supervisor, necessary to fulfill the mission of Crane Maintenance Department and/or Port Maintenance Division.
