Post-Award Associate, Office of VP for Research & Innovation

   

Overview
Cornell Research & Innovation’s Finance & Budget team has an immediate opening for a financial specialist to join the Post Award Finance Group as a Post-Award Associate. Working closely with the Post-Award Team Lead and other research administrators, this position provides high level, confidential services to Cornell research facilities, laboratories, institutes, centers, and faculty in support of their sponsored research awards. In addition to their experience with financial analysis, budgeting, and reporting, competitive applicants will demonstrate exceptional customer service and effective relationship management skills.  

Members of the Post Award Finance group provide comprehensive financial support and serve as financial leads and subject matter experts for large, complex multi-disciplinary sponsored awards, as well as supporting other select campus units. By design, the group’s support is available to manage administrative and financial matters associated with a faculty member’s research portfolio, so that faculty may focus on technical and academic content.

The Post-Award Associate’s key responsibilities include:

Acting as a liaison between project management teams and the Office of Sponsored programs, Sponsored Funds Accounting, and Research & Innovation Finance and Budget

Preparing and submitting complex financial reports that meet the needs of assigned units, principal investigators, and sponsor guidelines

Participating in the development and implementation of financial management strategies

Interpreting university and sponsor policies, procedures, and regulations and ensuring compliance with these requirements

Managing complex sub-contract activities

Developing detailed budgets and financial projections

Preparing journal entries

Serving as a primary resource for post-award financial information and guidance to customers within Research & Innovation

Conducting monthly briefings and fostering effective communications with principal investigators and project staff

Supporting other Finance & Budget initiatives including monitoring internal controls, conducting annual certifications, performing variance reporting and analysis, streamlining processes, and ensuring completion of monthly reconciliations

Associate’s degree in business, finance, accounting or related field and 2-4 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Experience with financial analysis, budgeting, financial reporting, and sponsored research financials

Demonstrated skills utilizing spreadsheets, databases, reporting systems, and other applications (such as Excel, Kuali dashboards, RASS, Workday) for analysis and reporting

Professional demeanor and a strong customer service orientation

Effective written and oral communication skills

Attention to detail and accuracy in work products

Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple work assignments to meet deadlines

Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and community members

Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others

Additionally, be sure to tell us if you have any of the following:

Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting or another related field

Advanced Excel proficiency (e.g., pivot tables and VLookups) 

Experience utilizing university systems, including Longview Budget System, KFS, OBIEE Dashboards, and OBIEE Answers

Experience with sponsored awards and their financial information, interpreting solicitations for research proposals and budget preparation, or proposal submission systems

Research Administration training or certificate 

Accounting training or certification 

Knowledge of Cornell policies, procedures, and programs

This position is located in Ithaca, New York and allows for the flexibility to work remotely up to 2 days per week. The New York Convenience of Employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.
