Post Bachelors RA - Experimental Fluid Mechanics
**Overview** At a time when complex environmental problems are emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division's staff, capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national security needs. Our diverse work addresses a wide range of national and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a Post-Bachelor Research Associate (RA) who is excited to learn and contribute to environmental science and engineering. We are looking for emerging leaders who want to make an impact in the world and advance our nation’s scientific understanding. The Radiological Materials (RM) Group, a part of PNNL’s Nuclear Sciences Division, is seeking to hire a Post-Bachelor RA with a background in chemical engineering and/or fluid mechanics to assist in research examining in-tank processing techniques to favorably alter the transport properties of nuclear defense wastes. This position will advance your career by giving you real world research experience and connecting you with leading experts in your field. You will meet other interns in multiple disciplines and be introduced to potential careers and various research opportunities. If you’re interested in making the world a better place, restoring the environment to its natural state, and gaining valuable research experience to launch your career, consider applying. **Responsibilities** You will be working with research scientists to evaluate methods for altering the transport properties of nuclear defense wastes. Your focus will be on executing planned transport experiments with simulated wastes to parametrically evaluate the impact of specific waste treatments on the ease of solid suspension and pumping. You will leverage this data to develop treatment strategies that improve nuclear defense waste treatment and recovery. Data interpretation, presentation, and documentation are important requirements for the work. **Qualifications** Minimum Qualifications: + Candidates must have received a Bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Preferred Qualifications: + B.S. in chemical engineering or equivalent program is preferred. + Hands-on experience working in a research or chemical laboratory and experience with data management and analysis tools (e.g., Excel or Python) are desired. Knowledge of fluid mechanics, slurry rheology, and transport phenomena is preferred. **Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment** + Laboratory work may result in exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals. **Additional Information** Not applicable. **Testing Designated Position** This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP).
