About the Project:
The geomorphological structure and biogeochemical function of river deltas around the world are in constant evolution through natural processes, climatic, and anthropogenic events. In addition to being epicenters of economic activity, deltas play an outsized role in the global carbon cycle. Over the last decade, there have been significant advances in evaluating the carbon stocks and sequestration potential of coastal "blue carbon" ecosystems, but we lack a comprehensive understanding of the magnitude of lateral carbon export from these ecosystems to the ocean. Thus, our goal is to evaluate 1) the relative contribution of tidal rivers, swamps, and marshes to carbon export to the ocean and; 2) how do these fluxes vary over time. We specifically focus our efforts on the world's major deltas because of the unique ability for remote sensing to address the large challenge of mapping both complex vegetation distributions and dynamic interactions between river and tidal flows. To achieve that, the candidate will use open source hydrodynamic models (e.g. ANUGA, SCHISM, TELEMAC, ROMS or ECODARWIN and ecogeomorphic models (marsh and mangrove productivity models), and calibrate and validate those models with SWOT, ICESat-2 and GEDI measurement of water surface elevation. She/he will also use Land Cover and Land Use (LCLU) maps derived from a variety of remote sensing instruments.
Modeling carbon export using hydrodynamic models such as ANUGA or SCHISM, along with ocean circulation models like ROMS or ECODARWIN.
Will also work with existing maps and seasonality data of coastal blue carbon ecosystems, river discharge, and optical data (Sentinel-2 and PACE) or existing carbon concentration products.
Using SWOT and ICESat-2 data to calibrate and validate the hydrodynamic models in a large set of global estuaries and river deltas.
Required Qualifications:
PhD in marine science, physics, oceanography, environmental science or similar.
A good understanding of hydrology and/or surface processes in coastal watershed and also in the near-shore environment is necessary.
