Postdoctoral Appointee - Software R&D and Scaling Machine Learning

The Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) High Energy Physics Division invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the Energy Frontier (EF) group on ATLAS Software R&D and HEP-CCE Scaling Machine Learning. The HEP Division performs cutting-edge research facilitated through advanced detector development, high-performance supercomputing (HPC), and innovative electronic and mechanical engineering. The HEP Energy Frontier group has recognized roles within the international ATLAS collaboration.

The successful candidate will be working on the development of core software for the ATLAS experiment with special focus on Input/Output software and metadata handling. The position offers the possibility to collaborate with other HEP scientists on ATLAS. In addition, as part of the Scaling Machine Learning (SML) effort of the High-Energy Physics Center for Computational Excellence (HEP-CCE), the candidate will be responsible for facilitating the scaling of HEP ML workflows for deployment on large-scale computing resources, such as high-performance computers (e.g., Perlmutter, Aurora, etc.). This includes tasks such as automating model design, optimizing hyperparameters, and training ensembles of models.

Position Requirements

Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0-5 years) in field of experimental particle physics

Programming expertise in C/C++, Python, Fortran, or another scientific programming language

Experience with ML software such as Tensorflow and PyTorch

Experience with ATLAS Software Development

The expected hiring range for this position is $70,758.00 - $110,379.55.
