We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.
The Human Genetics department at Genentech is looking for an exceptional computational scientist to study questions of key importance to the application of human genetics in drug discovery. The wealth of data available within Genentech means we are well-positioned to address a number of critical and impactful questions, including:
How does the genetics of disease risk relate to the genetics of disease progression?
How can we use genetics (or other omic biomarkers) to design smarter, more efficient clinical trials to accelerate the delivery of medicines to the patients that are most likely to benefit?
What are the best strategies for using human genetics to map the impacts of gene perturbation across phenotypes to maximize opportunities for repurposing, and/or reveal safety liabilities?
How can we leverage the combination of human genetics and single-cell genomics to understand the biology underlying disease risk and progression (including, crucially, the directions of effect)?
The postdoctoral position would involve research in one or more of these topics.
The Opportunity:
While this position is primarily computational, the project is highly collaborative, with regular interactions across the organization.
You will have the opportunity to work closely with computational colleagues to access and analyze both internal data (eg from our trials and genomic studies on human samples and cellular models ) and from external data sets (eg FinnGen, UKBiobank and other biobanks) to address these questions.
You will also have the opportunity for wider interactions, for example with colleagues in clinical development at Genentech, and with researchers in academia and in other companies who have interests in some of these questions (for example through our precompetitive involvement in FinnGen, ICDA and Open Targets).
Scientific insights resulting from this research are expected to be presented at external scientific conferences and published in high impact journals.
This is an excellent postdoctoral opportunity for someone who is keen to contribute to our understanding of how human genetics (and genomics) can provide the evidence that drives the precision medicine of the future.
The research areas covered by this opportunity are topical, of high relevance to Genentech and pharma in general and designed to deliver insights that will bring benefits to patients.
Who You Are:
Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Human Genetics or related field
Strong expertise in common disease genetics (GWAS, polygenic scores) and statistical genetics
Proven experience with applying standard pipelines for the analysis of large-scale genetic data sets
Demonstrated proficiency with R or Python
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate about complex genetic and statistical questions to both technical and non-technical audiences
Preferred:
Independent, highly motivated, and highly collaborative with the ability to work together with multi-disciplinary teams of computational and laboratory biologists
Enthusiastic about working in a scientific environment, especially one that is related to drug discovery and development
Quick learner, is curious about new areas and the opportunity to build expertise, and courageously and creatively take initiative to see your ideas implemented
Able to perform at a high level in a fast changing and demanding environment
