Postdoctoral Fellow-MSH-30035-358
**JOB DESCRIPTION** Title: Postdoctoral Fellow Salary: Department: Neuroscience Physical work location: 1425 Madison Ave, Icahn 10 th floor, room 10-52, New York NY 10029 Name PI or Supervisor: Towfique Raj, PhD; towfique.raj@mssm.edu Web link to Lab: rajlab.org Web link to Department: https://icahn.mssm.edu/about/departments-offices/neuroscience Administrative Contact: Jenny Rivera; jenny.rivera@mssm.edu Details of Research Project: The postdoctoral fellowship will support funded projects to explore the role of gene expression and RNA splicing in the diseases Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), and Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The projects will combine analysis of bulk tissue and single-cell transcriptomics with both short-read and long-read RNA-seq to identify rare cellular populations and rare mRNA isoforms in the spinal cord associated with ALS, the frontal cortex in FTD, and in sorted microglia in AD and assess how these cells and isoforms associate with disease pathology, disease progression, and genetic risk factors. This work could lead to a better understanding of how glial and immune cells interact with neurons and oligodendrocytes in the nervous system, and how the neuronal response to specific protein pathologies shapes the course of disease, and could lead to new biomarkers for disease progression and therapeutic response. The candidate will have access to human patient tissues from the Target ALS postmortem tissue collection, the University College London Queen Square Brain Bank, and the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center. The candidate will join international consortia with labs across the US and UK, and attend regular monthly virtual meetings to present progress and discuss with the other groups. The candidate will attend yearly in-person meetings funded by the Target ALS foundation to present their ALS results to a wider audience, and meet in person with the other consortium members. The candidate will join a multidisciplinary research team that includes geneticists, computational biologists, immunologists, neuroscientists, and physician-scientists at the Ronald M. Loeb Center for Alzheimer's Disease within the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The candidate will be mentored by both Dr Jack Humphrey and Dr Towfique Raj in the Department of Neuroscience. **RESPONSIBILITIES** Technical Duties: (include any protocols) + Experience analyzing large biological datasets, including principled application of statistical techniques + Expertise in Linux and high performance or cloud (e.g., AWS or GCP) computing environments + R, Shell scripting, Python, C++, Matlab, etc. **QUALIFICATIONS** Educational and other Requirements for the position: PhD Experience Required: 1Goals/Outcomes of the Research Project: Identification of novel pathways for neurodegeneration.
