The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Center for Advanced Vision Science. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will report to Jayakrishna Ambati, M.D. Dr. Ambati was a recipient of the 2014 NIH Director's Pioneer Award.

The candidate must be a strong communicator who works well in a team setting. Good command of written and spoken English is also essential. The ideal candidate will possess significant ophthalmology knowledge and ophthalmic microsurgical experience, or basic science knowledge using advanced techniques in one or more fields encompassing molecular biology or bioinformatics, biochemistry, genomics, protein isolation and characterization, Western, IP, 2-DIGE, ELISA, immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, RNA isolation and characterization, qPCR, oligo-arrays, in vivo imaging, cell culture and transfection. The candidate will be involved in performing COVID-19-related ophthalmic research to alleviate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Doctoral degree
Preferred Qualifications:
One-to-three years of experience in clinical research or a basic science laboratory, with the ability of unsupervised planning, execution, data collection, and analyses.
Computer skills are necessary for data analysis and interpretation with expected proficiency in Windows, Office, AdobeSuite applications, SPSS or other statistical software, and ImageJ.

This position is offered as a 12-month appointment, with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. This role is designed as a training opportunity in preparation for a full-time academic or research career. Postdoctoral Research Associates work under the supervision of a senior scholar, focusing on full-time research or scholarship, with the freedom to publish your findings.

Compensation:
Determined based on educational background and experience, in accordance with NIH guidelines.
Physical Demands:
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
