This Postdoctoral Position will involve research using our High Temperature Confocal Scanning Laser Microscopy (HT-CSLM) equipment to study the dissolution behavior of Al203 inclusions into various slag compositions, such as the CaO-Al203-SiO2-MgO system. The candidate must make in-situ observations of an alumina inclusion's dissolution in slags at steelmaking temperatures. You will be asked to study the dimensions and evolving shapes of inclusions using image analysis via HT-CSLM. You must be able to determine subsequent dissolution rates and normalized dissolution curves and identify the governing dissolution mechanisms for Al2O3 inclusions. You will also be asked to compare the dissolution of Al2O3 inclusions with the dissolution of SiO2 inclusions in a slag, and to investigate SiO2 and Al2O3 dissolution in other slag systems, and report on the effect of slag viscosity on dissolution kinetics.
