JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Wildfires are among the costliest natural hazards impacting ecosystems and human society. To deepen our understanding of how changes in large-scale circulation and local mesoscale processes shape wildfire environments in North America, the Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences at Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar position.
Position Details:
The successful applicant will be under the mentorship of Dr. Laifang Li and Dr. Xingchao Chen and collaborate closely with scientists at the Penn State Earth and Environmental Systems Institute. This is an 18-month appointment with the possibility of extension, contingent on performance and funding. The position offers a competitive salary, comprehensive benefits, and strong research support, including funding for travel to professional conferences. The anticipated start date is February 1, 2025.
Qualifications:
+ Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences or a related field (Atmospheric Science, Climate Dynamics, Oceanography, Hydrology, etc.) by the date of employment.
+ Proficiency in scientific programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R, NCL).
+ Experience in numerical modeling, with a preference for WRF and CESM.
+ Strong written and verbal communication skills.
+ Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary research environment.
