Description of Work Unit
The Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology Department expands the frontiers of knowledge through our broad-based expertise in applied ecology, quantitative methods, and human dimensions in the conservation and management of fish and wildlife. We teach students to think critically about environmental issues, and become ecologically literate citizens with the training to be successful in graduate school and in careers with natural resources agencies, firms, and non-government organizations. Our outreach efforts contribute significantly to life-long learning by assisting individuals and agencies to solve complex environmental problems and to be good stewards of our nation’s natural resources.
Position Summary
This position will work on a collaborative project with Colorado State University, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District. The project focuses on the food web ecology of Grand Lake, Colorado. Grand Lake is a natural high-elevation lake that has been incorporated into the Colorado-Big Thompson Project ( CBT ), which diverts water from the Colorado River to the Front Range. The lake supports a recreational fishery for lake trout and is adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park. Water clarity in Grand Lake has decreased since its inclusion in the CBT , with the introduction of nonnativeMysisshrimp around 1970 being a possible contributing factor.Mysisshrimp occur at high densities in Grand Lake and may consume native zooplankton, releasing phytoplankton from grazing pressure and decreasing water clarity. The project aims to characterize the role ofMysisshrimp in the Grand Lake food web using field surveys and stable isotope analyses of lake trout and other fish, zooplankton, and phytoplankton. Future goals pending availability of funding may include the use of experimental mesocosms to manipulateMysisshrimp densities. The postdoc will help lead field data collection on the Grand Lake food web, coordinate the processing of field samples, organize and analyze data, and disseminate findings through written reports, publications, and oral presentations.
