Summary About the Position: Serve as a Power Plant Electrician A with the responsibility of working with a maintenance crew of craftsman and trainees engaged in planning, organizing, directing and participating in the installation, modification, and repair of all electrical equipment at a hydroelectric power project which consists of a powerhouse, switchyards, dam or dams and related works. Responsibilities Recognize safety hazards of moving equipment; compressed air, gas and liquids, electric shock; flying particles; dust, dirt and fumes; falling from high places; and working in close quarters. Perform installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of all electrical equipment at a hydroelectric power project which consists of a powerhouse, dam or dams, and related works. Maintains; adjusts; performs preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, and overhauls the electrical features of generators/motors; pump/turbines; power transformers; all other power project electrical equipment and systems. Operate overhead and gantry cranes for heavy equipment handling or dismantling of units. Assists in the installation of new equipment and associated wiring and controls for modernization. The incumbent inspects and tests electrical equipment to ensure that the preventive and operating maintenance program meets established standards. Operates insulating oil purifiers and pumps. Under certain conditions where switching is required, may perform switching in order to effect or remove a clearance. Take proper steps to guard against these hazards, work in a safe manner and assists others to do likewise. Receive technical direction, when necessary, from a Power Plant Senior Electrician who gives advice and instructions on special or complex features of the work. Knowledge of Facility and Equipment Maintenance (FEM) to observe General Safety Requirements, EM 385-1-1, and "Safety Clearance Procedures," ER 385-1-31. Whenever electrical modifications originated at the project will assist in updating electrical drawings and review drawings and makes additions and/or corrections as necessary. Under certain conditions where electrical equipment, such generators or transformers must be operated to put into effect or remove a clearance, incumbent may perform these operations. Assist in keeping records and data in connection with all electrical maintenance and repair work and maintains file of electrical technical manuals, drawings, and diagrams. Operates various shop equipment such as drill presses, bench grinders, hydraulic presses, saws, and various air and electrical portable tools such as drills, grinders, wrenches, torches to rework or build new parts for major and auxiliary equipment. Utilizes test instruments such as ammeters, volt meters, meggers, oil testers and analyzers. Solve routine problems contacted in daily assignments and brings major maintenance problems to the attention of superiors and suggests solutions to these problems. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Power Plant Electrician A ~ without more than normal supervision. Have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex to work as a Power Plant A Electrician without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Power Plant A Electrician task/activities. I can organize and participate in the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of electrical power control equipment, distribution lines, or electric-generating equipment at hydroelectric powerplant, steam generating plant, nuclear plant, or commercial heavy industrial plant. In addition, I have the ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain power distribution circuits, control systems, communication systems, and high voltage heavy duty generating and distribution systems. - - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORTS- Physical effort includes climbing stairs and ladders; bending, stooping, and standing for long period; working in cramped quarters and/or in tiring positions; and lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and twisting objects frequently weighing up to, and occasionally over, 45 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS- Work is performed in the project powerhouse, other structures, and outdoors. The incumbent is exposed to noise, extremes of heat or cold, dirt, oils, greases, dust, energized equipment, moving machinery, odors, and fumes. Works around and over water, in damp drafty areas, and at various heights. May work with a variety of toxic or caustic materials. There is a possibility of cuts, burns, falls, and electrical shock. The incumbent must wear all appropriate safety equipment and protective clothing, and successfully complete and maintain all occupational health requirements. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct Deposit of Pay is required. Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation.
