POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:

THE ROLE:
The Energy Center is furnished with steam and electricity cogeneration equipment and water chillers. The incumbents in these roles will be accountable for receiving on-the-job training in the operations, monitoring and maintenance of the cogeneration power plant.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
At Central Connecticut State University this class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in the operations, monitoring and maintenance of the cogeneration power plant.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
+ Receives on-the-job training to perform tasks as outlined for the Power Plant Operator - Energy Center;
+ Assists in the operation, monitoring, and maintaining of power plant equipment for safe operation and production of high-pressure superheated steam, electrical power, and chilled water to meet energy needs;
+ Follows step by step instructions when touring the power plant to check and ensure reliable operation of equipment and to detect faulty or erratic operation of systems through excessive vibration, abnormal noises, extreme temperatures, and/or leakages;
+ Assists in monitoring gauges and other devices to standards and records performance indicators on log deficiency report;
+ Assists in taking samples and performs a chemical test to eliminate hardness in water as required;
+ Assists with taking general maintenance phone calls and directs calls to appropriate trade worker and completes work orders if necessary;
+ Assists in performing preventative maintenance repairs;
+ Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
+ Knowledge of
+ industrial or manufacturing operations, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment;
+ arithmetic functions including algebra and geometry;
+ Skills

+ Ability to
+ read and interpret schematic diagrams;
+ utilize computer software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting to include the operation, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
+ For state employees one (1) year of experience as a General Trades Worker in the operations, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment may be substituted for the General Experience.
+ For state employees two (2) years of experience as a Skilled Maintainer in the operations, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment may be substituted for the General Experience.
+ Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in a program related to mechanical equipment, mechanical engineering or related field may be substituted for the General Experience.
+ College training in mechanical engineering or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience/Understanding of Mechanical Systems
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
+ Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
+ A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights, use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles and may be exposed to significant levels of noise, dust, heat and risk of injury from equipment and or environmental conditions.
