Overview
Perform under supervision on a regular, irregular, or rotating shift schedule assigned duties in connection with the operation and routine maintenance of turbines, boilers, generators, auxiliary equipment, HVAC, and other equipment pertinent to plant operations.
Responsibilities
GENERAL DUTIES The normal duties may include but are not limited to: 1. Employees will be knowledgeable of and follow all safety rules, procedures, and practices. 2. Employees acting in conjunction with supervision or individually as directed by supervision must be willing to direct the training of other employees in the correct operating procedures necessary to fully satisfy the classification duties of Station Helper - Plant, or other duties with which the employee is familiar. 3. Employee will, when directed by supervision, report to assigned locations for the purpose of receiving training and will actively participate in the training activities. Employee will carry out assignments in training for and/or performing fire fighting and first aid. 4. Employee will exhibit an adequate competency level pertaining to activities delineated in the Duties and Qualifications sections of this job classification. Employee will demonstrate such competency via performance of job duties and training and testing programs administered at intervals prescribed by Louisville Gas and Electric to assure correct classification of employees. 5. Employee will, during the normal performance of his duties, watch for and promptly report to supervision any damaged or defective equipment or conditions which may cause damage or injury. 6. Employee will perform duties of lower or higher classifications that are incidental to the job and are within his/her capabilities including those needed for the purpose of training in the requirements of the higher classifications. 7. Employee will keep all equipment, tools, materials and work areas in a clean and orderly condition. 8. Employee will report as directed to any facility for any shift where needed. 9. Employee will perform work in a responsible and cooperative manner to facilitate a positive working environment. 10. Employee will compile information and generate reports, forms, and documents as required. 11. Employee will represent the company to the community with attention to the highest standard of conduct, appearance, and attitude.
SPECIFIC DUTIES Duties which may include, but are not limited to: 1. Employee will become knowledgeable of operations in plant. 2. Employee will become knowledgeable of the Operating Card System. 3. Employee will take readings and record same: Change charts on recording meters and instruments as directed. 4. Employee will check operation of motors, bearings, hydraulic couplings on draft fans, and feed pumps. 5. Employee will check operation of pulverizers, coal feeders, and scales. 6. Employee will operate and check operation of sootblowers and deslaggers; hand lance furnace walls as directed. 7. Employee will operate ash and sludge disposal equipment, including conveyors, as directed. Employee will check operation of sumps, hotwells, heater drains, air compressors, heater levels, filters, and conveying equipment. 8. Employee will make routine inspections on and around assigned equipment, and report any irregularities to the unit operator. 9. Employee will assist operating personnel in the performance of plant operations. 10. Employee will wipe and clean equipment, panels, and control boards as directed, maintaining the equipment in a clean and orderly fashion. 11. Employee will perform functions in other areas of the plant such as: laboratory, office, shops, and etc., as needed to maintain overall efficient operations. 12. Employee will perform routine and non-routine housekeeping in both plant and yard, and do other clean up tasks as directed by Supervision. 13. Employee will check operation of unit heating equipment including make-up system, heat convectors, circulating pumps, fans, and heating coils. 14. Employee will check operation of EHC system. Employee will check and operate the hydraulic systems associated with the pulverizers.
Qualifications
EDUCATIONAL_EXPERIENCE-MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY INTO: GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS 1. Employee must meet all general qualifications of employment. 2. Employee must be able to speak, understand, read, and write English, and be able to understand and carry out written and oral instruction. 3. Employee must have education or knowledge equivalent to that normally represented by satisfactory completion of the requirements of a high school diploma, or equivalent. 4. Employee must be able to learn to use the tools and equipment required in the work. 5. Employee must be willing to become familiar with the Company Safety Rules, and willingly comply with such rules. 6. Employee must have a valid state driver’s license, and pass a given driver’s test for operating Company vehicles, including those with a manual transmission. 7. Employee must be willing to work outside under varying weather conditions. 8. Employee must be willing to report as directed to any facility for any shift where needed. 9. Employee must be in good health, and be able to perform the physical requirements of the job, which include work at heights and under heavy manual labor. 10. Employee must possess the willingness and ability to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to advance to higher classifications. 11. Employee must be willing and able to communicate through both verbal and written reports. 12. Employee must be able to learn to make and read simple drawings and sketches. 13. Employee must be willing to carry through work assignments, and must be willing to conduct himself/herself in a manner that encourages cooperation and satisfactory work from others assigned to work with him/her. 14. Employee must successfully complete such entry level testing programs as are promulgated by Louisville Gas and Electric to measure job responsive aptitude, ability to retain knowledge, and problem solving skills.
SPECIAL_QUALIFICATIONS-SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS 1. No prior experience necessary. 2. Employee must be able to write legibly and coherently, and speak English clearly and distinctly. 3. Employee must be willing to study the various operations required to learn the operation of the power plant operation. 4. Employee must be alert in observing hazards and avoiding accidents. 5. Employee must be observant and have normal color vision acuity in addition to being able to detect abnormal operations through sight, sound, and smell. 6. Employee must be able to learn and understand relationship between plant equipment and data to be processed for reports. 7. Employee must be able to learn and understand parameters enabling performance of duties in efficient manner. 8. Employee must have a working knowledge of mathematics, including addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions, and decimals.
WORK_CONDITIONS-Industrial work environment including exposures to temperature extremes (hot, cold) associated with inspection and operation of power plant equipment and systems. Work includes heights (ladders, platforms, stairs, etc.) and proximity to high-voltages. Dust and debris associated with fossil fuels and fuel by-products. Respirator use required.
PHYSICAL_EFFORTS-Must be able to lift 50 lbs. from the ground to the height of 30 inches and from waist level to chest on a daily basis; Typical equipment/materials that must be lifted includes but is not limited to tools, materials, various bags of chemicals; Able to climb up and down stairs and vertical ladders unassisted on a hourly basis; Perform hand manipulations extended near floor level for extended periods of time on a regular basis.

Remote Work
The company reserves the right to determine if this position will be assigned to work on-site, remotely, or a combination of both. Assigned work location may change. In the case of remote work, physical presence in the office/on-site may be required to engage in face-to-face interaction and coordination of work among direct reports and co-workers.
