Job Purpose or Objective(s): As a Pre-Graduate Pharmacy Intern, you will, under direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist: fill and dispense prescriptions and medication orders from physicians or mid-levels.  Operate Pharmacy department equipment.  Act as a drug information resource to patients, medical staff, nursing staff and ancillary department personnel.  You will review patient charts for billing and claims data, insurance, audits, and will assist with medication authorizations reviews. Perform Pharmacy Intern duties as outlined by Oklahoma State Pharmacy laws. You will report to the Director of Pharmacy or Pharmacy Billing Supervisor/ Coordinator.

 

Primary Tasks: Under direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist:

1.       Assist licensed pharmacists in reviewing prescriptions issued by physicians or other authorized prescribers to assure accuracy and determine formulas and ingredients needed.  As designated by licensed pharmacist and within scope of practice: reviews and monitors drug therapy.  Assist the Pharmacists with responsibilities observing the organization’s mission, policy and any applicable laws.

2.       Compounds medications using standard formulas and processes such as weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients.

3.       Monitor all posting onto the patient profile in order that accuracy, drug allergies, drug interactions, duplicate therapy, rational drug therapy and incompatibilities may be realized and better patient care received. 

4.       May enter data into the computer system such as patient, prescribed medications and cost, perform medication authorization, claims reconciliation, and maintains patient profiles and charge system, if requested by the Chief or Assistant Chief of Pharmacy, or Pharmacy Billing Supervisor, or Pharmacy Billing Pharmacist.

5.       Check patient medication cassettes before delivery to patient care areas to ascertain that the correct drug, dosage form, schedule and strength are being dispensed.

6.       Answer questions and provides information to physicians, nurses, patients and other health care professionals on the appropriate use of medications, drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and storage.  Addresses complaints and resolves problems.

7.       May perform activities such as: medication reviews, performance improvement projects, and presentations to staff as assigned. 

8.       You will perform other duties as may be assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

·         Currently enrolled and in good standing with an accredited college of pharmacy

·         Current Oklahoma Pharmacy Intern license. 

·         Able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the hospital staff.

·         Demonstrates ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as dosage calculations, formulation of pharmaceutical preparations and data analysis.

·         Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

·         Demonstrates ability to interpret technical instructions and deal with several abstract variables.
