Pre-Law Program Coordinator

Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Student Services, the Pre-Law Program Coordinator recruits, academically advises, and prepares program students for application to law school. This role collaborates with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to identify qualified high school students at recruiting events and activities, promotes the Pre-Law Program, and creates a pipeline to transition students from high school to college study. The coordinator is also part of a centralized professional advising team that develops, coordinates, implements, and assesses activities designed to assist students in the preparation of a career in Law, or related field where a law degree may be of value. That includes ensuring  enrollment in appropriate courses, helping them find appropriate department/faculty advising and resources in their major program, and staying on track to timely degree completion. The Coordinator of the Pre-Law Program will also plan and coordinate programmatic activities each semester, build relationships with alumni who attended law school, plan panel discussions and presentations by visiting law professionals, coordinate student clubs and organizations aligned with pre-law studies, and LSAT preparatory workshops and activities.  

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collaborate with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Academic Departments to promote and recruit students into the Montclair State University Pre-Law Program, including participation in recruiting open houses, new student orientations, family orientation programs, and other related events.

Liaise with regional law schools to develop pipelines, partnerships and articulation agreements for Montclair State University students to gain preferential admission.

Support the execution of a comprehensive and holistic academic central advising program that addresses the needs and promotes academic success of students in the Pre-Law Program.

Partner with Career Services to help students develop professional writing, speaking, and interviewing skills.

Provide academic advising and coaching to Pre-Law Program students, including course selection, developmental advising about career and major choices, intrusive advising, and guidance on student suitability for law school.

Counsel students who are at risk of failing and formulate plans to meet the academic standards that will allow them to remain in the Pre-Law Program.

Maintain a caseload of undergraduate students in the Pre-Law Program from their admission into the program.

Maintain currency in the theory and practice of Academic Advising and the expectations of law schools for admission.

Help students in the Pre-Law Program understand and successfully negotiate University procedures, policies, and regulations.

Plan and coordinate program activities and events each semester, design summer programs, panel discussions and invite presenters by visiting law professionals.

Coordinate student clubs, especially the Pre-Law Society, and organizations aligned with Pre-Law studies.

Provide regular LSAT preparatory workshops and resources for students in the Pre-Law Program.

Collaborate with Career Services staff to help Pre-Law Program students develop professional writing, speaking, and interviewing skills.

Meet with students and use Navigate and Handshake to schedule appointments and maintain notes.

Coordinate with the University Pre-law Advisor to plan and implement the annual New Jersey Law Admissions Day event. Manage all communications, logistics, budget, and staffing.

Assist students in the Pre-Law Advising Program with applications for internships and other relevant experiential learning activities, as well as preparation of law school applications.

Track student applications and acceptances into law programs through LSAC and produce annual reports.

Work with the Dean and the College Advisory Board to support Pre-Law initiatives in conjunction with College faculty and alumni.

Attend CHSS career team meetings, University career meetings, and weekly meetings with Pre-Law Advisor Faculty Members.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED: 

Master’s degree from an accredited university in a related field.

Minimum three (3) years of professional experience working in a higher education setting or similar organization.

Ability to develop and implement programs that specifically target Pre-Law students in various majors at different stages in their undergraduate experience.

Ability to work well with various stakeholders including alumni, faculty, staff, and other members of the community.

Familiarity with current understanding of core concepts, values, and competencies of Academic Advising.

Experience with event planning and management.

PREFERRED:

Five (5) years of professional experience in a higher education setting.

Experience with pre-law academic advising, programming, and co-curricular requirements.

Experience with higher education recruiting and retention.

Facility with Banner, Degree Works, Navigate, and other applications related to student academic records and student support services.

Prior experience in law school admissions.
