Apply Today! **Job Summary and Qualifications** Responsible for patient care under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Responsible for proper storage, handling, and mixing of breast milk and infant formula feedings. Assists with clerical duties in the absence of Unit Secretary, and PCT duties. **JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES:** + Receives physician’s orders daily regarding infant feedings for the next 24 hours. + Performs refrigerator/freezer daily checks, ensuring that temperatures are within normal ranges. Ensures that bedside refrigerators are checked on a daily basis. Follow hospital protocols for calling Bio Med when temperatures do not meet unit standards. + Restocks supplies within Milk Prep areas within par levels. + Restocks supplies in bedside carts within par levels. + Performs monthly audits as appropriate to ensure Milk Prep process is safe and being consistently followed. + Provides orientation to all new staff and students regarding mixing of breast milk. + Serves as the expert resource to other staff regarding safe delivery of breast milk. + Receives physician’s orders daily regarding infant feedings for the next 24 hours. + Mixes feedings according to guidelines and physician’s orders. + Places each baby’s feedings in their separate bedside refrigerators to be fed. After mixing utilizing aseptic techniques, + Maintains cleanliness of Mixing Room per protocols and according to unit standards. + Performs other related functions as assigned. **PATIENT DOCUMENTATION** + Appropriately documents observations, interactions, patient responses, and other pertinent data at the time of occurrence. + Communicates observations of individual patients to the RN **PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES** + Cooperates in temporary assignments. + Cooperates with other health team members in achieving common goal of quality health care. + Assumes responsibilities for quality care of his/her shift. **PATIENT/FAMILY EDUCATION** + Provides patient/family education as per department and hospital policy and procedure. + Provides teaching material as needed (pamphlets, video tapes, etc.) to enhance patient teaching. + Acts as a resource to parents/families regarding safe handling, delivery and feeding of Human Breast Milk. **UNIT SECRETARY DUTIES** + Answers nursing station telephone and relays message to charge nurse and/or other nursing staff. + Greets and directs visitors at nursing station. + Prepares chart on each patient admitted. Knowledge/Use of downtime forms/processes. + Pulls copy of TPN orders and sends to Pharmacy. + Adds documentation forms to chart as needed. + Assists physician in obtaining charts and diagnostic results. + Assembles the medical record for transfer of patient. + Places medical record in chart rack. + When adding charting material to medical record, ensures that each paper or form is labeled. + Prepares medical record when patient is discharged to send to Medical Records department. + Keep unit clean and organized. + Call consults. + Maintains supplies, forms and necessary requisitions for the unit. + Demonstrates cost effective use and maintenance of unit supplies. + Assists department manager with secretarial duties related to unit. + Welcomes each family member/visitor upon entry into NICU, utilizing exemplary customer service skills. + Ensures security of unit by checking visitors and parent ID as applicable. + Ensures that siblings meet acceptable criteria to visit (ie: temp checks, vaccination records, and no symptoms of illness). + Walks parents, visitors, and siblings to the baby’s bedside, ensuring that nurse approves visit at that time, and that families have a comfortable, acceptable place in which to visit (gather chairs, warm blankets, water, etc, if necessary). + Greets families/visitors when they leave, assuring them that their baby is in good hands, and that we will contact them with any major changes in their care or condition. **NURSE TECH DUTIES** + Maintains cleanliness of Unit, ensuring that families/visitors first impression of the NICU is clean and presentable to them. + Ensures that conversations with families and visitors present are professional and do not involve personal issues or negative remarks. + Washes/dries/folds unit specific laundry, maintaining the laundry room cleanliness. Restocks laundry room supplies, puts laundry up in respective areas. + Provides orientation to all new staff and students regarding PCT and US jobs. **EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:** High School Graduate or GED Preferred **EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED:** Enrolled in nursing school or 6 months patient care experience in at least one of the following areas: CNA, EMT, PCA, Paramedic, nursing home, hospital, or equivalent. Previous NICU experience preferred. **SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:** Demonstrated skills in organization, verbal and written communications, customer service, math, analysis, reading, following instruction, basic computer usage. Medical terminology. Able to stand for extended periods of time, and move around the unit freely. Ability to work with Human Breast Milk, including mixing with additives for feedings of infants in NICU. Must have strong math/algebra skills and comprehension abilities. Must be able to think critically. **LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:** BLS required. HCA Florida North Florida Hospital is a 523-bed, full-service medical and surgical acute care center.
