Position Summary

Applies clinical expertise with the core values of a nurse preceptor to oversee multiple nurse preceptees at one time. Develops and guides new hires into the assigned unit while also supporting current departmental preceptors. This role emphasizes support for staff outside of orientation through promotion of quality initiatives, best practice, and bedside support. This role will work within the nursing excellence structure to ensure alignment with onboarding and practice initiatives. A nurse in this position must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within a high level of autonomy and flexibility. Opportunities for skill advancement exist with the goal of achieving and/or maintaining clinical expertise for both patient care and staff support. 

 

Responsibilities

•    Oversees nursing preceptees, ensuring achievement of benchmarks and consistent training

•    Works within the preceptor resource model, when needed, to support pipeline initiatives 

•    Evaluates the new hires progress and works with unit leadership and/or nursing education to set goals 

•    Promotes consistent practice amongst new hires and existing staff, leading to improved outcomes 

•    Identifies knowledge and practice gaps and actively collaborates to create solutions 

•    Familiar with standard concepts, practices, policies, and procedures within the organization

•    Facilitates learning opportunities at bedside and adjusts teaching techniques to the learner

•    Provides real time feedback regarding practice to staff to promote best practice and organizational initiatives

•    Aligns with organizational and designated departmental goals to promote desired outcomes

•    Completes patient care shifts, when scheduled, to maintain clinical expertise

•    Completes mandatory training requirements for the role and the hospital

•    Relies on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals

•    Performs other related duties as assigned 

•    Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function

•    Competent to meet age specific needs of the unit assigned

 

Requirements and Minimum Qualifications

•    Graduate of a nationally accredited nursing program required

•    Licensed RN with a minimum 3 years’ patient-facing RN experience at time of hire; ADN or diploma requirement; BSN or higher preferred

•    All non-BSN RNs with less than 3 years’ patient-facing RN experience at time of hire are required to be enrolled in a baccalaureate (or higher) degree program in nursing within 1 year of employment, with completion within 3 years of hire

•    State of Idaho Registered Nurse or licensure pending as documented by temporary licensure OR current RN licensure from a state participating in the "multistate privilege to practice" compact with Idaho

•    Minimum 2 years’ nursing experience in the specialty being supported (i.e. critical care, emergency department, medical-surgical, etc.); 3-5 years' experience preferred

•    NIHSS required within 90 days of hire

•    Advanced certification highly encouraged within 1 year of hire

•    BLS required

 

Working Conditions

•    Must be able to maintain a standing and/or sitting position

•    Typical equipment used in a clinical job

•    Must be able to stoop, crouch, or bend

•    Must be able to lift or move up to 35 lbs

•    Must be able to push, pull, or transport heavy equipment

•    Must be able to assist in patient transfer

•    Exposure to needles, blood and body fluids, etc.

•    Must be able to reach arms above or below shoulder height
