Position Summary Helen Gordon Child Development Center (HGCDC) is the full-day children’s program for Portland State University. Located on the PSU campus in downtown Portland, the Center provides a model early childhood program for the children of Portland State University students, faculty and staff, and the Portland community. The Center is a laboratory for students and faculty participating in observation, practice and research activities in Early Childhood Education, Child and Family Studies, psychology, and related fields. The Preschool age Coordinator assists the HGCDC Director in providing overall program administration and leadership for the Helen Gordon Child Development Center and is responsible for the overall philosophy and pedagogical coordination of the Center’s programs for preschool children including those classrooms at both the main HGCDC and HGCDC Satellite Infant Toddler programs. Working alongside the Infant Toddler Coordinator at the HGCDC satellite center and contributing to /supporting a creative and cohesive environment between the two sites’ is crucial for this position. Minimum Qualifications B.A. in Child Development, Human Development, Early Childhood Education, or related field 4 years of full-time, lead teaching, preferably in an accredited infant-toddler setting Must have thorough knowledge and understanding of child development. Knowledge of early childhood education theory and practice; demonstrated ability to apply theory to practice Has demonstrated ability to work effectively with culturally diverse populations Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills required. Preferred Qualifications M.A. in Early Childhood Education or a related field. Is familiar with RIE and Reggio strategies to working with preschool children. Work Days/Hours Monday-Friday 8am-5pm Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity.

The starting annual salary for this position will be between $48,144 and $54,161, but may be negotiated above this range dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.

Additional Information Licenses, Certificates, or Other Credentials
Staff must maintain continuous enrollment in the Office of Child Care, Central Background Registry. Staff must maintain certification in Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR.
Staff must complete the Recognizing Child Abuse and Neglect in Oregon training.
Staff must hold a current Oregon Food Handler’s Card.
Staff must complete the Safe Sleep for Oregon’s Infants training.
Staff must complete the Introduction to ChildCare Health & Safety training.
Staff must complete the Prevention is Better Than Treatment training.
Staff must complete the Foundations For Learning training.
Staff must participate in and maintain 24 clock hours of training or education annually as defined by the Oregon Rules for Certified Child Care Centers as well as SPARK, Oregon’s Quality Recognition and Improvement System.

Special Working Conditions 
Working with young children requires the ability to deal with multiple stimuli: noise, varied lighting, sustained activity, and continuous emotional and physical demands. 
Able to lift, move, hold and carry children and objects up to 50 pounds across a classroom. 
Able to push/pull at least 6 children in a stroller or wagon and walk with a group of children for one mile without stopping. 
Able to engage in full range of motion to lift, reach, squat, climb, sit, and otherwise fully participate in classroom activities.
Must be able to see and hear children for supervision and perform physical tasks within a time frame of a fast-paced early childhood environment. 
Able to supervise and interact with children outdoors for extended periods of varied weather conditions.
