Preservation Librarian

About Your Department:

 

Stanford Libraries Preservation Department manages the long-term preservation of

analog library collections. The department is dedicated to promoting a culture of

preservation throughout Stanford Libraries. We support teaching and research by

connecting library staff to our staff, our services, and our resources. We preserve library

materials at every stage of the collection lifecycle through a robust program of

preventive and collection care, conservation services and preservation education.

Through the complementary teamwork of two units, Collection Care and Conservation Services, the Preservation department stabilizes, repairs, houses, and prepares analog

library collections for storage, use, digitization, and exhibition. As one of five departments in Technical and Access Services, Preservation works closely with units

across the library organization to manage the thoughtful stewardship of library

resources.

 

About the Position:

 

Reporting to the Associate Director for Preservation, the Preservation Librarian manages the Collection Care program including coordination of preventive preservation operations and direction of a production-oriented 8 person team responsible for shelf preparation, bindery, circulating collection repair, and housing. As an integral member of the Preservation department management team, you will work closely with the Associate Director for Preservation and the Head of Conservation Services to cultivate a respectful, supportive and inclusive workplace and develop appropriate and sustainable workflows that meet department, Library, and University strategic priorities. You will be a primary liaison between the Preservation Department and stakeholders across the organization requiring excellent interpersonal and communication

skills. Our ideal candidate understands the lifecycle of academic research library collections from acquisition to use to storage and can exercise strong initiative in identifying, coordinating, and leading preservation projects ranging from outreach and education to collection surveys.

 

Core Duties*:

 

Management

 

·         Manage the daily operations of the Collection Care unit coordinating workflows for end processing, commercial bindery, collection housing, and circulating collection repair.

·         Supervise Collection Care staff including hiring, training, coaching and fostering a respectful, supportive, and inclusive work environment.

·         Research, develop, and implement collection care workflows and processes, working with the FOLIO library service platform and ABLE bindery program.

·         Oversee supplies ordering for the Preservation Department.

·         Collaborate with library colleagues in Technical & Access Services, Collections and Public Services, and Remote Storage.

·         Work with external vendors for outsourced preservation.

 

Collection Care

 

·         Manage the environmental monitoring and Integrated Pest Management programs, evaluating and responding to environment and pest issues impacting collections and collection storage.

·         Serve on the Preservation Quarantine Team; assess collection items for mold, pests, and unknown substances; manage and perform freezer and anoxic treatments and mold remediation.

·         Recommend and coordinate collection housing and processing projects.

·         Perform collection assessments and surveys for a variety of formats.

 

Collection Emergency Response

 

·         Assist the Associate Director for Preservation on all aspects of collection emergency response including ongoing maintenance of the response plan and development and delivery of online and in-person collection emergency response.

·         Work closely with the Associate Director for Preservation, Head of Conservation Services, and Library Facilities team to respond quickly and efficiently to collection emergencies at all Stanford Libraries locations.

·         May direct collection emergency response activities.

 

Outreach and training

 

·         Serve as a liaison between the Preservation department and stakeholders across the organization.

·         Develop and deliver collection care and handling training for library staff.

·         Contribute to department outreach initiatives including blog posts, social media streams, tours, and annual Preservation Week planning.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

Education and Experience:

 

·         Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries or a combination of education and relevant experience

 

Other Relevant Education & Experience May Include

 

·         Training in preservation principles and practices, including emergency response.

·         Experience developing and delivering online and in-person training materials and sessions.

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

·         Knowledge of relevant aspects of library operations including understanding of contemporary library practices, trends and emerging technologies.

·         Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of people.

·         Effective problem solving, analytical and organizational skills.

·         Demonstrated broad knowledge of library discovery environments, office automation software, and online resources.

·         Ability to quickly learn and use print and online tools and resources and in area of specialization.

·         Evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills

 

Other Relevant Knowledge Skills and Abilities May Include

 

·         Substantial knowledge of preservation principles and practices.

·         Knowledge of basic project management processes and procedures.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks. Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds. Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other). Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls. Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:

The expected pay range for this position is $81,546 - $98,456 per annum.  Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
