About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Equipment Operator III for Preventative Maintenance in the Public Works department. The Public Works department is responsible for maintaining and improving city infrastructure, including roads, bridges, retaining walls, rights-of-way, snow and ice removal, and other infrastructure projects.
What you’ll be doing:
+ Maneuvering heavy equipment and operating complex mechanisms involving digging, moving earth and materials, grading, loading, and performing similar tasks to advance construction and maintenance projects.
+ Operating paving equipment, milling machines, excavators, track hoes, and backhoes for skilled digging and trenching with exacting tolerances and specifications.
+ Operating loaders with large volume and weight capacities to load materials into trucks or move them over short distances.
+ Operating motor graders, and excavators with blade attachments for large construction and maintenance projects.
+ Operating bulldozers, and compactors to move earth, gravel, sand, debris and other materials for construction and maintenance projects.
+ Driving large tractor-trailer rigs and low boys to transport and move construction equipment to and from job sites.
+ Inspecting and preparing equipment for safe operation, performing light maintenance, and securing equipment after use.
+ Performing manual labor in support of construction, maintenance, and repair projects.
+ Following established safety procedures and communicating effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.

About you:
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:
+ High school diploma or GED required, with vocational or technical training in heavy equipment operation or a related field.
+ Two years of experience in heavy equipment operation.
+ Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
+ Must obtain and maintain Class A CDL within 90 days of hire.
+ Flagger and Work Zone Safety certification. (preferred)
+ Ability to operate complex equipment with precision and safety.
+ Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team.
+ Commitment to safety and adherence to established procedures.
